Update on the Rental Fixer Upper

15 July
I thought I'd share an update on my parent's rental that we have been working on since The Renter From Hell moved out (click on the think to read all about that). Mostly we've been busy cleaning and painting.

Here is a before shot of the bedroom...

Rental fixer upper

You remember there was a dog who pooped and pee'd all over the house so the carpet had to be ripped out and the padding scraped off just to try and get the smell out.

Now the floors have all been coated with Kilz odor blocking/stain blocking paint and it worked like a charm! It actually smells nice in there now!

The new carpet will go over the top and there won't be any issues with stains reappearing or smells!

Here is a before shot of part of the kitchen... that wall heater obviously had to go! I think this was the third time the linoleum was burned because of it.

Here is an after shot with the new AC/heater combo. It is actually much prettier than this photo because the front cover isn't on here. It's kind of like the units they have in hotel rooms except much quieter.

The linoleum will be patched when the guy comes to do the carpet (surprisingly the linoleum is salvageable!)

Here is the living room before...

And after painting!

The new renter chose a nice, creamy white for most of the walls in the house.

Before...

And after...

Her accent wall in the living room is a tan color.

The new railing in the upstairs loft before...

And after...

The little room upstairs got new paint too.

Ahhh. so much better :o)

Back down to the one and only bedroom... the old door was re-installed and I think we should leave it as is... all chippy and worn. I think combined with the fresh new paint it looks so cool... but that's kind of up to the renter if she likes it like this (I'm crossing my fingers).

It has the original door knobs still.

And just look at the worn paint, you can see all the colors it used to be.

And crackling... old, natural crackling, not from a bottle of crackle medium :o)

Speaking of original... look what they found when they were replacing some Sheetrock!

Parts of an old shipping crate that contained parts to a B-17 airplane, they are dated 1944!!

They had used these in the construction of the house! And we thought we were the only one's who knew about re-purposing! :o)

My dad removed the pieces and is saving them... not sure what he will do with them yet.

Here are a couple of shots of the back of the house outside. The back door will be painted burgundy/red to match the front door. The bottom half of the house is getting new horizontal siding and the whole thing will be painted grey with white trim.

And the front...

The fun stuff should be starting soon... new carpet, new kitchen cupboards and open shelving, etc. I can't wait, I hope you'll stick around to see the end results!

  2. I'll definitely be sticking around! It's looking good...it's amazing what some paint can do for a place! Can't wait to see it all finished! I too hope the renter wants to leave the door as is...so cool! And those airplane parts boxes are so neat. I hope your dad does something cool with them! Have a great day.

    Blessings, Vicky
