DIY Faux Fireplace

Do you have a fireplace in your house?

I do have one now but there have been houses in the past where I would have loved to have a fireplace.

I'm going to show you how to DIY your own faux fireplace! This is a perfect solution for renters 😃

But I hear you... you're thinking, that sounds hard, I probably can't do that.

First, stop saying those things to yourself, you can do anything you set your mind to! Second, it's not too hard because we are starting with something that makes it half-built already... a vintage twin-size headboard!!

DIY Faux Fireplace From a Headboard

My inspiration came from my friend Marie at The Interior Frugalista. She made a really sweet faux fireplace from a bookshelf headboard.

Not long after I saw her fireplace, I found my very own vintage bookcase headboard at Goodwill for $12.99!

I followed Marie's basic steps she outlined in her tutorial.

First I added a board on the bottom, then built a 3-sided box out of pine boards to create the firebox. I also used some thin plywood sheets to fill in the sides.

I did cut out a rectangle from the front of the headboard to make the firebox the size I wanted.

At this point, you could stop and leave the back open if you wanted to just add some fake logs, an electric fireplace insert, or candles.

I decided to make a back for mine. I used chalkboard paint so I could draw a fire inside 😊

I decided to be smart about it (for once) and I painted the back before I attached it to the back of my fireplace and I painted the rest of the fireplace at the same time.

It almost killed me though... I am SO impatient! I wanted to see it all put together so bad but making myself chill a little meant no taping and I could just paint away without being too careful! Yay!

I even primed the chalkboard before I attached it... I had my sh*t together for this project you guys! 😂

I filled the screw holes with wood putty and added a scrap of trim that I had along the top edge of the firebox. Here is my chalkboard fire!

What do you think? If you don't have a fireplace, this is a fun DIY and you'll have a mantel to decorate too!

I took this down to my space at the antique mall and paired it with a vintage chair and both sold almost immediately!

This is such a budget-friendly way to get a fireplace in your house. I spent just $12.99 for the headboard and about $14.00 for a sheet of thin plywood. I only used about half of the sheet of plywood, I had everything else on hand. So, my total cost was about $20.00 😲

  2. Oh my gosh! I think this might be my favorite redo of yours! It is so cool! I have seen these faux fireplaces before but never realized some of them were made out of an old headboard. Genius! I love it and would love to have one in my bedroom...just not sure there's room. It's not very big. I am sure it will sell in no time! Today is your Friday right? If so, enjoy your 5-day weekend!!!
