Krylon Chalky Finish Spray Paint Review & Desk Organizer Makeover

Krylon Chalky Finish Spray Paint

Have you seen the new Krylon Chalky Finish spray paint yet? The only place I've been able to find it where I live is at Fred Meyer but the minute I saw it I had to try it! I mean seriously? Chalk paint in spray paint form?! Yes, please!

I would have loved it if Krylon had contacted me and asked me to review their product but they didn't so this is a review I'm doing on my own... just because I want to share with my favorite blog readers!!

You can find this paint here: Krylon Chalky finish Spray Paint.

Here is my guinea pig. I found this desk organizer at Goodwill for $4.99.

I've had it in my garage for over a year now. I knew it would be super cute painted white and distressed (which is why I bought it) but I kept stalling because I knew it was going to be a pain to paint inside all those little cubbyholes!

Then I had a DUH moment and thought "why don't I spray it?"

Chalky Finish spray paint to the rescue!! (Note - I did sand this piece. Regular chalk paint claims to bond to anything without sanding so I'm not sure how well this would do if you did not sand. The can doesn't specify but normally spray paint bonds better anyway).

It took one whole can of paint to finish this piece. Actually, I could have used a little bit more but I was being too lazy to go to the store for more!

The can states it will cover 25 square feet (this is the same for regular spray paint). Since the desk organizer was a darker wood and I used white it took more paint.

Don't you just love these cute little pulls? I left them 'as is'. The labels were already in there too and I think whoever made them had cool handwriting so I left them too.

After spraying this piece I waited about an hour and then distressed the edges a little bit. The Chalky Finish paint seemed to distress a little easier than regular spray paint so that was nice.

It has a very matte finish as you would expect chalk paint to be.

I did not paint the inside or sides of the drawers because I thought this would make sliding them in and out difficult and it would scratch the paint eventually.

The paint does have a tendency to run easier than regular spray paint so very light coats are in order. I had some runs on the top of this piece but I just sanded them until they looked like regular distressed areas!

I would definitely recommend this paint for smaller or difficult to paint (small, hard to reach areas) projects. It is more expensive than regular spray paint. I found it for $6.99 a can.

My review
  1. Pro: Same coverage as regular spray paint (about 25 square feet depending on the color of what you are painting and the color of spray paint you use).
  2. Pro: Very matte finish.
  3. Pro: Distresses easily.
  4. Con: Runs easily, use several very light coats.
  5. Con: More expensive than regular spray paint (where I live the cost for regular spray paint is about $3.50 per can, Chalky Finish spray paint is about $7.00 per can).
  6. Recommended? YES!

What do you think? Have you tried it yet? If so, what were your thoughts?

  1. I have been using Krylon Chalky Finish Spray for over a year with great success. It is the product to use for pieces with a lot of nooks and crannies like your piece. It is $8 here in SC at Hobby Lobby - you can wait for the week spray paint is 30% off or use the weekly coupon. A large dresser took 1 1/2 cans to complete.
