How to Make Industrial Metal Hearts

03 February
I have some old galvanized steel sheets that I found at the dump.

I knew that I could find something creative to do with them.

So for today's project, I thought why not something for Valentine's Day?! That's unexpected, right?

Valentine's Day is a frilly holiday full of cards and roses, wine and chocolates... why not some rustic metal hearts?!

I have two sheets of this corrugated metal, they look like they have been through a fire or something but I like the patina.

Supplies to make your own
  • A scrap of paper and a pencil (to make a pattern)
  • Metal
  • Tin snips
  • File
To make it into a garland:

To make these hearts, you just needed a small piece of metal (depending on how many you want to make.

I've listed some other ideas at the end of this post if you don't have corrugated metal like this.

You'll need a set of tin snips that have a straight cut, left cut, and right cut, and a rasp file. Other types of files will work, but this is what I used. I've provided links to the supplies at the beginning of this post.

Do you remember cutting out paper hearts as a child? You fold the paper in half and cut half of a heart to make a perfectly symmetrical heart.

Cut one out of paper to use as a pattern. You can also freehand one if you don't want it to be symmetrical.

Use the straight-cut tin snips to cut a small square from the metal that is large enough for the pattern you created. This will make handling easier when you are cutting out the heart.

Use a pencil and trace the heart onto the metal. You can also freehand draw them directly onto the metal if you want them to all be different.

Cut out each heart using a combination of straight, right- and left-angled snips.

This takes a little bit of effort with this kind of metal. I cut a total of eight hearts but I was pretty much over it at six 😂

The metal will be SHARP so be careful!! In fact, you really should wear gloves but that's not how I roll! 😎 Sorry, dad!

Once you get them cut out, use the rasp to file down the edges and remove any sharp burrs.

You can erase any pencil lines that are left.

These are great to put in a wooden dough bowl or large glass jar as-is!

Or you make them into a garland.

Use the Crop-a-Dile to punch holes in the top of each heart and string them together with twine to create a garland.

You can also cut a larger metal heart the same way.
