You may remember my post How to Use the Clover Pom-Pom Maker. At the end of that post there were some links to different sizes of pom-pom makers and... *gasp*... a heart shaped pom-pom maker 😍

Well, my mom got me one for Christmas, yippee! They are a bit more difficult to use than the regular round pom-pom makers though so I thought I'd show you how to use it!

Heart shaped clover pom-pom maker tutorial

This is what the Clover Heart Shape Pom-Pom Maker looks like.

And what it looks like opened up. You can see it has little grooves and teeth along the edges. I'm not sure how but these help form the heart shape... we'll just say it's a magical pom-pom maker!

I tried two different sizes of yarn and I found that this thicker yarn worked the best. I'll share the heart I made with thin yarn at the end of the tutorial so you can see the difference.

You start by opening up one side of the pom-pom maker and begin wrapping the yarn around it.

You want the yarn to go in the grooves between the teeth until you have the whole side covered.

Once you have one side wrapped, cut the yarn and close that side to keep the yarn in place.

Do the same thing with the other side and then close that side too.

This is what the outside looks like now. Kinda messy but that's ok!

Next, cut a length of yarn long enough to wrap around the pom-pom maker.

Wrap that piece of yarn around the pom-pom maker like so.

Then loop the yarn like you do when you tie a shoe.

There are two little prongs on both sides of the pom-pom maker...

Pull the ends of the yarn tight just like when you pull your shoe laces and wrap the ends of the yarn around these prongs on each side. This will hold it tightly in place until you are ready to tighten up the pom-pom.

Now you'll cut the yarn to create your pom-pom. Put your scissors into the little groove between the rows of teeth and cut.

Do this on all sides.

Next you'll trim the yarn that is sticking up in the center. Be careful not to pull or you'll pull the yarn out of the pom-pom maker.

Do this on all sides.

Now, unhook the yarn that you wrapped around the prongs and begin pulling it tight... as tight as you can without breaking the yarn. (Note: you can loosen up the arms a little bit as you go but don't open them yet!)

Once you have it pulled as tightly as you can, gently open up the arms.

...and pull off the sides. Finish tightening up the pom-pom and then knot the ties.

It should look something like this now. You'll need to trim and shape it up a little bit. Pay special attention to the point and the top.

Looking good!

It's cute yes?!

This is the one made with skinnier yarn. I don't like it quite as well, I really love the fluffiness of the larger yarn.

Adorable!! Looks a little complicated but probably a little practice would make it easier. The first one is always the trickiest!
