Upcycled Screwdriver Snowmen

22 December
Are you guys all ready for Christmas? Gifts purchased and wrapped? Baking done?

Not me! I like to wait until the last minute... that's how I roll yo!!! 😁

I've been doing really good with getting all the craft projects I wanted to make this year done though! I have one last project to share with you today before the big day!

Turn old wooden screwdrivers into adorable snowmen!

I first saw these adorable little snowmen over at Anderson + Grant about 2 years ago and fell in love with them! They've been pinned and in the back of my mind ever since then!

I've been collecting old wooden handled screwdrivers since then whenever I find them at garage sales and thrift shops.

I'm not going to reinvent the wheel by going over the whole process to make them because they were Jamie's idea and she has a great tutorial over on her blog for how to make them yourself! Making a Snowman from a Screwdriver.

But I'll give you the Reader's Digest version!!

I taped off the areas that I wanted to paint on the old screwdrivers I collected. Looking at them in this picture I wish I would have left the red one in the original paint... oh well.

And then I followed Jamie's tutorial for making the heads from clay. The only thing different I did was I used orange clay to make their little crooked carrot noses so I didn't have to bother with painting them.

I used an old locker basket to hold the screwdrivers upright while the glue dried. I used E6000 to get a really good hold.

Then I finished painting the screwdrivers and heads (minus noses!) so they were the same color of off-white. The eyes are indented into the clay and then painted black and their little cheeks are blushed with pink paint. I used a Q-tip, one end moistened to rub over the cheek area, the other end rubbed in pink paint to blush their cheeks. The key is to wipe almost all of the paint off on a paper towel before rubbing the Q-tip on their cheeks.

I didn't have any flannel to make little scarves for them but I found some old quilt pieces in my fabric that I thought would be cute for scarves.

I tore little strips from the quilt, tied those around their necks along with a little sprig of greenery and then added a jingle bell. Then I used some glitter that has teeny-tiny stars in it on the tops of their heads, on their noses, and on their scarves and bells!!

I think they turned out so cute!!

I used some rub-on letters and added "brrr" and "Snow" on the screwdrivers that had flat sides.

As you can see these look super cute as plant pokes in a floral arrangement!

You can really see the stars in the glitter in these close ups. 😄

I'll be collecting more wooden screwdrivers this summer because I think little pumpkin men at Halloween next year would be super cute!
