What's Trending for 2014 and How I've Incorporated Some Into My Decorating

Incorporating Trending Decor

Hi, my name is Tania and I am a magazine addict.

Mostly decorating magazines. I get so many great ideas from them! It’s also a fun way to follow the latest trends.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not one to find out that something is trending and immediately go out and buy it just because I saw it in a magazine, but if I see something that speaks to me I might incorporate it into my style!

Better Homes and Gardens Magazine has a great article on their website about what’s trending in decorating for 2014 called Decorating Trends: What We Love Right Now.

I picked out some from the article that I love and have incorporated to some extent in my decor.
  • Warm greys –
My Ikea sectional with the gray slipcover on it.
Grey painted bookcase turned entertainment center.

 Grey rug from RugsUSA.

Grey is typically considered a cool color so the term “warm grey” seems rather oxymoronish (that’s a word isn’t it?!) Here is a great article from CIL Paint Blog to help tell the difference, Warm Grey vs. Cool Grey – Spotting the Difference.

And Apartment Therapy has a really great article about how to work with warm and cool colors.

  • Taxidermy
I know… this is a touchy subject, many people are totally against it, I’m kind of on the fence about it. I have one of the biggest hearts around when it comes to animals. My personal opinion is if it’s vintage taxidermy, yes! I like it. If it is just antlers like I have, I’m fine with that too.

Going out and shooting an animal and then displaying it in your home… No, no,no, that’s not for me. There are other ways to get this look without displaying a real animal though… faux taxidermy. Do a Google search on faux taxidermy and you'll see what I mean!

  • Flokati

The official definition of flokati is "a Greek woven woolen rug with a thick loose pile" but I think it's expanded in the decorating world to include throws, ottomans, etc.

I'm perfectly happy with my "faux" flokati!
  • Mint green

 Mint green entry table.

  • Wallpaper
I'm experimenting with some vintage wall paper in my basement craft studio as we speak!

  • Colorful painted furniture

  • Colorful front doors

Here is a great article from Sunlit Spaces: The 5 Most Welcoming Colors for Your Front Door. I painted mine red this fall but haven't had a chance to get a picture to show you yet.

Here are some more examples that I love, these spaces have integrated some of the current trends into their homes beautifully!

Well, what do you think? Have you incorporated any of these trends into your home?

  1. Tania, I LOVE your living room. Now I am not into gray at all, but you must be on to something with the "warm" gray. Your living room looks so cozy and inviting, I'd love to plunk down in it with you and share a pot of coffee! Also, I am a magazine collector as well. I just can't let them go and they are taking up a LOT of room in my house. The very very old editions of Country Living are so much better than the new ones, which are packed with so many ads you can hardly find the articles. Before I started my wee business I used to pull out the old copies on snow days, long holidays, and when I was sick, but now all I do is work on Joyful Linens! I have to now go check out your post on your basement craft room because somehow I missed that one. My whole house is in upheaval due to me trying to figure out how to house a business and myself under one roof!

    1. Thanks so much Joy! I find myself sitting around looking through magazines too when I should be doing something more productive!

  2. I never will warm to taxidermy!! Love the mint and I'm getting back to an appreciation of wallpaper. It will be interesting to see all the variations on the 2014 themes. Thanks for the heads up!

  3. This is really interesting! I love the gray trend but I don't have much of it. I've had a collection of antlers for awhile...my dad has gathered them for me on his hikes. And I just bought a fun, chippy mint green stool for the shop...hmmm...may have to keep it-ha! :)
