Easy DIY Wood Shim Address Sign

14 September
I am still working on my front porch. I painted it and added some pretty faux fern baskets a couple of months ago here: Front Porch Update & Silk Fern Hanging Baskets.

That made such a huge difference all on its own but I still have a few more updates I want to make!

One of those updates was to redo my house numbers. Here is what I came up with!

Make an address sign with wood shims

Supplies Needed

I reused my current house numbers and I had a package of shims as well as all the other supplies out in the garage hoard!

You can play around and arrange the wood shims in any design or pattern you like.

use wood shims to make an address sign

Once you have figured out how you want them arranged, glue them down with wood glue.

glue wood shims to the board

Use clamps if you have them while the glue dries. You could just place something heavy on top if you don't have clamps.

Once it has all dried, you'll probably be left with some shims hanging over the edge. Cut these off with a jigsaw or hand saw.

Here is my wood shim covered board... all glued down and trimmed.

Next, stain your sign the color of your choice. I chose a pretty weathered gray that compliments the color of my newly painted porch (the link is up in the supply list if you like this color).

I chose to reuse my current house numbers and just spray paint them.

Attach the house numbers to the plaque once the stain is dry.

I used a sawtooth hanger on the back to hang mine.

Now there was one other thing that I wanted to update on my porch today... it's the doorbell.

Here is the old, cruddy one.

Now, I could have just cleaned up and repainted the old one but I found THIS cute one on Rejuvenation awhile back and I just loved it!

Installing a new doorbell is like the easiest thing ever! You just shut off the breaker and it's two tiny little wires that come out of the house and attach to two tiny little screws on the back of the doorbell!

I'm really happy with how the porch is coming along! I have just a few more things I want to do!
