DIY Rock Mosaic Stepping Stone

08 May
Are you ready for another Thrifty Chick's challenge?!

This month my friends and I challenged ourselves to make a mosaic project!

I'll share my project here and then you'll be able to check out the other ladies' projects at the end of the post.

Now, I'm going to admit... this project didn't turn out exactly how I imagined it would 😔 I was disappointed in the results and even thought about bailing out because I didn't have time for a Plan B.

But, I decided that we all have projects that don't turn out and you know what? It's ok! I feel better knowing I tried!

If you want to try and make your own rock mosaic here's what you'll need:

Supplies Needed

  • Scrap wood to make a mold
  • Screws
  • Concrete
  • Plastic to line the mold
  • Rocks (river rocks work well because they are smooth and round)

Thrifty Chicks Projects

I didn't buy anything for this project so it is very thrifty! I have river rocks in my landscaping and scrap wood and concrete in the garage!

To make the mold cut some scrap wood into the size you'll want your stepping stone. I made mine 12" square.

Screw the pieces together to form the mold.

Set the mold on a level surface and then line it with plastic so that the concrete will stay in the mold and not seep out underneath!

I used a black plastic garbage bag.

Add some concrete mix and water and mix it up.

I just added a little concrete mix and then a little water until it was the consistency of pudding. I didn't measure, just eyeballed it, and I mixed it right in the mold!

You'll want to pick out your rocks ahead of time so you have what you need. Arrange the rocks in the design you like and then press them down into the concrete.

I made a flower design.

Once you have the design all placed, cover it up loosely and allow it to dry for a couple of days.

When you are ready to remove it from the mold, just unscrew the pieces of wood! Easy!

The part that I'm not too happy with is the texture of the concrete (those tiny rocks bug me!), my flowers aren't arranged equal distances from each other (I wish I would have left the half flower on the right out completely), and I somehow missed adding one of my flower "petals" on the right... either that or it sank!! 😂

But I guess it's not too bad... it's quirky like me!

Here's a quote I saw just at the right time too!

"An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail." - Dr Edwin Land

I put my new stepping stone in front of my outdoor fireplace and I think it looks kind of sweet!
