Upcycled Children's Book Calendar

01 January
Today I'm sharing a cute little upcycling project to kick off the new year... and a whole new decade 😲!!

Everyone needs an adorable calendar on their desk don't you think! These are so easy to make, you can whip one out for yourself and some for friends in no time!

I originally saw these at Stuff-n-Such By Lisa. I thank her for the adorable inspiration, this is how I made mine.

I had everything I needed to make these on hand but the supplies are very inexpensive if you need to purchase them.

Supplies You Will Need:
  • Vintage Children's Book (these are plentiful at thrift stores)
  • Thin Cork
  • E-6000 Glue (to attach the cork to the book)
  • Paper Cutter
  • Small Printed Calendar (I found some I liked here)
  • Crop-a-Dile (for punching holes through the book covers)
  • Ribbon
  • Thumb Tacks (to hang your calendar from the cork)

This was one of my childhood books. Yes, I debated for quite some time about whether I wanted to dismember this book. In the end I decided that I would like to make something out of it that I can use and see every day instead of having the book tucked away doing nothing.

It even has my name inside 😊

To begin, take the inside pages out of the book and set them aside (save them for another project!) They should come out pretty easily. Separate the front and back covers by cutting down the middle of the spine. Mark the center of the covers at the top.

Use the Crop-a-Dile to punch a hole on either side of that center marking, through both covers.

Put the book covers back together like they originally were and slip the ribbon through the holes. Tie a bow on the front. TIP: put something between the covers when you are tying the bow, (make sure the tops are touching though) this will ensure they aren't too tight together and the books will stand up.

Add a button to the bow with a little dab of E-6000.

Print out one of the sheets of monthly calendar pages.

Cut them out with the paper cutter so that all the months are the same size and stack nicely on top of each other.

Cut a piece of cork slightly larger than the calendar.

You want the cork to show a little behind the calendar.

Use the E-6000 to glue the cork to one corner of the book front.

Once that is dry, use thumbtacks to hang the little calendar from the cork square.

Isn't that the cutest!?!

I can't wait to take this to work and put it on my desk 😊

I made some for my co-workers too!

I have one male co-worker but I didn't want him to be left out! I actually turned the cover around and used the inside of the covers for this one. My co-worker is a redhead too so this is appropriate!
