Upcycled Stool Gift Wrap Storage

I've been so excited for today to come... it's Thrifty Chicks day!!

If you're new, on the second Wednesday of each month a group of us (aka the thrifty chicks) get together for an upcycling challenge project! This month's challenge is small furniture upcycles!

I'll share my project and then you'll be able to check out everyone else's projects!

I've had this project in the back of my mind for seriously... a couple of years now!! I've seen several different versions on Pinterest and with this challenge, I finally got the chance to create my version!

I think 2020 is going to be my year for organization. This will be my first project to get myself organized 😀

Upcycled Stool Gift Wrap Storage

I decided to use this "Brite Blue" spray paint that I already had.


To get started, sand down the stool a little bit and clean it up, then give it a coat of your chosen paint color.



Mark and predrill the holes for each wheel.


It feels a little weird to be adding the wheels to the seat of the stool but once it's flipped over it'll be perfect!



Here it is with the new paint and wheels.


I cut the bag in half so it was shorter and then stitched two straight seams side-by-side down the center of that to create two smaller bags. Once I had the two seams I just cut down the center between them.

You could use an old pillowcase or any fabric of your choice really!


I boxed the bottoms of each little bag but it would be fine not to.


Make little hangers with the ribbon and velcro.


Measure how far down you want your bags to hang and cut a piece of the bias tape (or ribbon). Hem each end.


Add the ribbon and a square of the velcro with the bag sandwiched in between and stitch around the edge and then in an 'x' pattern. Then add the other piece of the velcro to the other end of the ribbon sewing in the same way.


Loop the ribbons over the rungs of the stool like so.


I was able to get three little bags out of my one big bag.


Now it's time to load this sucker up!! Here is my previous mess... I had wrapping paper in the plastic storage bin, bags and bows in the two bags, and every time I was ready to start I had to hunt down some tape and scissors!😡


I made a little loop with some of the leftover bag fabric and velcro to hang my scissors from.


One bag holds bows.


One holds the folded paper that doesn't come on a roll.


One holds scraps of wrapping paper.


Tags, tape, a ribbon shredder, etc. are also in this bag.


A larger gift bag holds other gift bags and hangs over one of the legs of the stool.
