DIY Coat Closet
04 August
I shared an update of our basement remodel recently and one thing I mentioned is an upcoming makeover of a closet that is located under the stairs.
And there's a creepy little door at the end.
Then I painted inside the closet and both sides of the door with the same Polar Bear white by Behr that we've used in the rest of the house.
The next day, I installed the glue-down carpet tiles. We had enough of these left over from the gym area of the basement to be able to extend them into this closet.
For the molding, I reused some of what we already had from the demo of another area of the basement.
I used the molding to push down and secure the edges where the linoleum had curled and a brad nailer to attach it.
So far, everything we used for this DIY coat closet we already had (baseboard molding, leftover carpet tiles and adhesive, leftover paint) but I did purchase new black hinges to replace the old ones.
I could not find a new, black closet doorknob at any local stores so I chose to spray paint this one for the time being. When it starts to show signs of wear, I'll replace it at that time.
Next, I installed a coat rod (also reused from the closet we are removing to create a built-in entertainment center). We were testing it out with a robe!
We had enough room for all our coats plus our luggage, snowboarding equipment, and a steamer, and we still have room for the vacuum too!
We have converted that closet into a much-needed coat and storage closet for things like luggage and snowboarding equipment.
I believe the previous owners used this as a wood storage closet because the walls were badly marked up and there were wood chips and dirt all over the floor.

Of course, I made a video too! Hopefully, you're enjoying the video content I've been creating. The blog posts and videos compliment each other, sometimes one will touch on something not covered in the other.
Here is what this closet looked like before! 😬
Scary right?! The walls were so scratched and marred up! It was a little unnerving at first but then we realized that they had used this as a wood storage closet, whew!
I did not remove the old linoleum like we did in the other areas simply because a) this is a closet, and b) the carpet tiles and molding will completely cover it and take care of the curling edges.
I have a tip to make replacing door hinges super easy!! Replace them while the door is still hung... Just unscrew either the top or bottom hinge from both the door and the door frame, screw the new one into its place, and then move on to the other hinge! Easy peasy!
This has made such a difference already and it feels so nice to finally have a space in our fixer-upper house completely DONE!
P.S. That creepy little door may or may not be painted shut now 😁😉

What an improvement! Even though it was a small space, it was a lot of work but the result is so worth it. You can never have too much storage space!
ReplyDeleteThanks! And I agree, there's never enough storage areas!!
