I saw some home decor mirrors online recently that I thought were really pretty.

They are gold and have parrots on them.

Then I found some vintage 1980s HomCo plastic mirrors with birds on them at the thrift store and it made me think of them.

I decided to see if I could create my own version of the pretty parrot mirrors I saw.

Here is what these looked like when I found them.

And here is the mirror I saw online. It's offered by a website called Trouva and you can see it here: Gold Parrot Mirror and there's one with two birds here: Gold Mirror with Two Parrots.

The problem is these are $105 and $140 each!! 😲

When I found the HomeCo mirrors at the thrift store they made me think of these and I wanted to try to get the same vibe with them. I found a bird wall hanging without a mirror too that matches them.

I started by taping off the mirror portion and spray-painting all three pieces with gold. I used Rust-Oleum Metallic spray paint.

Then I went in with some soft black craft paint.

I watered it down and then used it as an antiquing wash.

It will get down into all the crevices and grooves and give these a more vintage feel.

I worked in small sections so it wouldn't dry too fast. Once I had covered part of it, I wiped it back off with a paper towel.

Once that was dry, I used gold craft paint to add more layers.

I didn't want this to get into the crevices too much so I dry-brushed the gold over the top.

Once the gold was dry, I used some Triple Thick glaze to seal the pieces.

And here they are!

I see these mirrors quite often at thrift stores and garage sales. You could paint them almost any color and use the dark paint wash and they would be so cute!

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the mirror I saw online at Trouva and the ones I made. I didn't quite get the gold right but I still think they are pretty and vibing the same, what do you think?

  1. using the diluted dark paint as a wash is what really brings it out.

  3. Very pretty knock off mirror's Tania and I like the depth yours have by using the black wash (clever by the way)!
