Christmas in June - Macrame Santa Ornaments

28 June

We are at the halfway point folks... It's time for Christmas in June!

I have been running a fun series called 12 Months of Christmas if you are new. It's a monthly "craft with me" project to make a new Christmas ornament every month.

Some of them are recreations of vintage ornaments and some are new ornaments I've designed that are inspired by vintage ornaments. They are all reminiscent of the ornaments we had on our childhood Christmas trees 😊

Just think, if you make just one of each ornament, you'll have 12 adorable new ornaments to add to your tree in December! If you make two of each ornament, you'll have 24 new ornaments, that's enough for a whole tree!

They are also great for a child's hope chest... do you remember those?

This month we are doing some very basic macrame! Below, you'll find the tutorial in blog post format as well as a YouTube video!

I want to be completely transparent here and let you know that this is not my original idea. There are many similar macrame Santa ornaments (and just the little hats as ornaments) online. I do not know whose original idea it was so cannot give proper credit.

Here is the video tutorial!

I chose to make these cute macrame Santas as an updated version of some that my mom made when I was young. We had them on our tree every year and now I have some of them. Those are on the left here:

Step one - Cut the macrame cord

You'll need six lengths of white macrame cord, approximately 11 inches long each. It's helpful to use a magazine to wrap the cord around. Most magazines are about 11 inches long. You only need to go around the magazine three complete times and you'll have three cords on the front and three on the back, for a total of six.

Cut them at the top of the magazine and again at the bottom.

Step two - Create Santa's beard

Tie each of the six lengths of macrame cord around the wooden ring using a lark's head knot.

  1. fold the cord in half
  2. place the looped end behind the wooden ring
  3. bring the tails up and over the wood ring and through the loop
  4. pull the ends down
  5. pull them tight

Tie all six cords in the same way and slide them close together at the bottom of the wooden ring. This will be Santa's beard.

Use a large needle or toothpick to pick out the weave on the cords.

Brush out the pieces.

Then trim the ends either in a V shape or half circle.

Step three - Cut the toilet paper tube

Set the beard aside and then slice off a piece about 1/2" wide from the toilet paper tube. Leave it in a cylindrical shape, do not cut it open.

Step four - Create the hat

Use the magazine again but turn it lengthwise and wrap the yarn around it about 20 times.

Cut the yarn at the top of the magazine and again at the bottom creating about 40 lengths of 8-inch yarn.

Tie each piece of yarn around the slice of the toilet paper tube using the same lark's head knot method as you did for the beard. Depending on the thickness of your chosen yarn, you may need slightly more or less yarn.

Now, push the ends of all the yarn down through the tube and out the other end.

Cut another length of yarn twice as long as the others and tie it around the ends in a tight knot. Use the tails to create the ornament hanger by tying in a knot at the end.

Trim the ends so it resembles a pom-pom on the end of a stocking hat.

Step five - Assemble Santa

Put a couple of beads of glue on the top of the wooden ring and slide the hat down over it.

Make sure the sides of the hat are touching, or almost touching the sides of the beard. Add a dollop of glue on the top of the beard and the bottom of the hat and add the nose.

Add an embellishment to the hat. I used an unfinished wooden heart on this one. A star would be cute, a silk flower, or some holly, etc. would also be nice.

Clamp it and let it dry for a little while.

That's it, you now have an adorable little macrame Santa or gnome ornament to add to your tree!

Step six - share

Share your finished ornaments on the Facebook share thread!

Here is one I made with a green hat and red heart embellishment. They would be cute with any color for the hat!

See how the one with the green hat has a curly beard? I did not brush the cords on that one 😊
