Early Fall Mantel With Repurposed Thermoses

23 September

It's time for our bi-monthly Do-It-Over-Designers (DOD) challenge and I've got what may be the simplest do-it-over project in the history of mankind... or at least the DOD challenges 😂

If you are new and don't know what the DOD challenge is, it's a bi-monthly blog hop where a group of us DIY blogging friends get together virtually and take something old or unused and do it over into something new.

We find our items in closets, garages, barns, yard sales, thrift stores, etc. and you can hop around from blog to blog and check out all our projects! I'll have links to all the other ladies' projects at the end.

As I said, this is by far the easiest transformation ever. It's not really even a transformation, it's just repurposing something old.

These are the items I'm repurposing. Three vintage thermoses in fall colors and an insert from an old trunk. Isn't the old paper on that trunk insert pretty? 😍

I made a video of the transformation.

I always like to create my fireplace mantels by starting with a blank slate.

I have a post here that goes through the process I try to follow when decorating my mantel: How to Decorate a Fireplace Mantel & My Cozy Winter Mantel

I added the vintage trunk insert first.

Baskets add some height and texture. I use these a lot on my mantels because they go with all seasonal decor.

Then I added some books in coordinating colors. I chose to lay mine down and use them to elevate other items but they would be cute standing up leaning against one side of the trunk insert too.

I set the mushroom terrarium I made for the last DOD challenge on the book on the left. You can see that cute DIY here: Repurposed Glass Hurricane Candle Holder.

And then a framed owl picture that I had in my fall decor.

Then I started adding the vintage thermoses.

This is the most recent one I found at the thrift store for $1.99. It was missing the outside lid but I took the inside one off and stuck some fall silk flowers in it.

Bada-bing, bada-boom... and you have a repurposed vintage thermos!! 😁

I added some more mushroom decor that I gathered from around the house.

The large green mushroom is from the sale section at Craft Warehouse a few years ago.

I placed a cute little vintage mushroom painting on top of the trunk insert.

And finally, a little repurposed Jello mold mushroom I made over in front of the owl picture. Check that post out here: DIY Mushrooms from Furniture Legs and Jello Molds.

Lastly, I added a candle in the trunk insert...

And a little metal leaf dish.

And that's it, it's finished!!

  2. I love the fall mantle. Fall decor is my favorite. The thermoses are perfect and less formal looking than vases, which gives it a more casual vibe. Good job!!

  3. What a pretty mantel! I love the thermoses. I'm always looking, but I think everyone else is also on the hunt for them. The patterns and shapes of yours are perfect for fall! PS- glad to see your post is up and Blogger approved. Oh boy!
