Christmas in November - Scrap Fabric Tree Ornaments

21 November

It's time for Christmas in November's ornament make-along project. After this, there is only one more project for December!

If you missed any of the last ten months' projects, you can check them all out here:

Twelve Months of Christmas

This month's project is a super easy one; you'll be able to whip out a bunch of these in no time!

As always, I'm sharing both a video tutorial and a written tutorial below.

I'll also have a share thread on my Facebook page to share our finished ornaments.

Here is the supply list:

Supplies Needed:
  • Scrap fabric (at least two coordinating fabrics)
  • Cinnamon sticks (or twigs)
  • Buttons
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Something to make a hanger with (I used jute twine)

As you can see, the fabric you choose doesn't even have to have a Christmas theme as long as it has the colors you want to use because you won't be able to really see the pattern on the finished trees.

Here is the video tutorial:

Step One - Prepare the fabric and cinnamon sticks

You can use as many fabrics as you'd like on each tree or just one fabric. I prefer at least two coordinating fabrics on each tree.

Make a little snip about 1" in from the edge of the fabric and then tear a strip. Depending on the width of your fabric, tear additional strips to use. You'll need about eight strips about 8" - 10" long each.

Your cinnamon sticks should be about 5" long, if they aren't you should be able to break an end off. Cinnamon sticks that have the seam on one side and aren't twisted work best.

NOTE: You can use twigs from the yard if you don't have cinnamon sticks.

Step Two - Tie the fabric

Tie the strips of fabric around the cinnamon stick alternating fabric patterns. Keep the tied portions all on one side of the stick.

Step Three - Trim

Flatten and straighten the fabric and then trim it diagonally into a tree shape, larger at the bottom and smaller at the top.

Step Four - Add the button

Add a button to the top of the tree with hot glue.

Step Five - Add a hanger

I used jute twine to make a hanger, you could use embroidery floss, yarn, etc.

Tie it into a loop and hot glue it to the back of the ornament, behind the button.

Step Six - Share and Enjoy!

That's it, hang your new cute ornaments on your tree! They would make really cute package tie-ons too 😃

Be sure to share your finished ornaments on the Facebook share thread for this month's ornament.
