DIY Closet Door Mural

27 March

I've had this project in mind for the closet doors in our bedroom since we moved into this house over two years ago.

But other spaces in the house took priority and then I purchased a rental that my daughter is now living in that I have been focused on fixing up lately.

But I finally decided to stop making excuses and get it done 😏

This is a really easy project that even a beginner can tackle. You can try this on a wall or flat closet doors like I did.

This was my inspiration photo.

For this mountain mural, I used four colors (just the sample pots work great) and a basecoat color.

The colors I'm using are all Behr paint colors, Minestrone, Portuguese Dawn, California Coral, and Sunburst for the mountain and sun, and Polar Bear White for the basecoat.

Check out the video below to see the transformation.

Here are the closet doors in our bedroom. They are plain hollow core sliding doors, the perfect canvas for a mural!

I started the makeover by giving them a basecoat of the wall color, Polar Bear white.

Then, I lightly sketched the design with a pencil.

I chose to freehand the mountains since it is such a simple design but if you're recreating this project in your home, you could use a projector.

When it came to the sun, I needed something to trace to get a perfect circle. This straw hat was just the right size!

Once I had the design sketched out, I started painting with a brush along the sketch lines with the first color, Minestrone.

Then I used a sponge roller for the rest of this section.

While that was drying, I painted the sun with Sunburst.

For this and the rest of the mural, I just used a brush since the sections were small.

For the second layer of the mountains, I used Portuguese Dawn.

And lastly, for the third layer of the mountains, I used California Coral.

I did two coats of all colors.

And that's it! It took me a couple of hours after the initial white base coat.

I'm very happy with it 😊, it's exactly how I imagined it.

What do you think? Have you ever painted your own mural?

It's been quite a while since we first started updating our bedroom, you can see the before and some other progress photos of it along with some other areas of the house in this post: Fixer-Upper Progress!
