Upcycled Thrifted Wood Bowls

31 May

I was at the thrift store recently and found a wooden bowl with a large hole in the bottom on the shelf. I thought it was weird so I left it there.

Another aisle over I found a second, smaller wooden bowl that also had a large hole in the bottom. I put it in my cart and returned and got the other one too.

The large bowl was $1.49 and the small one was .99 cents.

You might have the same idea I did for upcycling these bowls.

Supplies

First, I cleaned the bowls because they were quite dirty.

I found some cute painted bowls online that I wanted to use as my inspiration for painting my bowls.

I used DecoArt paints for this project and chose Buttermilk for the base coat of both bowls.

Then I chose Vintage Pink and Dark Scarlet to paint the flowers.

I randomly painted some large polka dots for the flower centers and then just lightly free-handed the flower petals in with a pencil.

I wanted them to be large and very organic so I didn't worry too much about it.

I did the same thing on the bottom of the bowl. I also filled the big chips in the wood of both bowls with wood filler but didn't get a picture of that.

The smaller bowl had striped detail in the wood, so I took inspiration from the little dotted and striped bowls, painted the top and bottom sections with vintage pink, and added polka dots on the middle two stripes with Hauser Medium Green.

I connected the bowls together using the holes that were already drilled in the bowls and a dowel that fits the diameter to create a small tiered bowl set.

I used Hauser Medium Green on the dowel to tie the bowl color schemes together.

You can use wood glue or E6000 glue to adhere the dowel to the holes.

Then add the top bowl using glue.

To tie it together even more, I added polka dots to the dowel with the buttermilk that I used for the base coat! 😊

I sprayed the whole thing with a couple of coats of clear satin sealer to protect it from scratches and it's done, what do you think?

I thought of a couple of ideas for what to do with it but really, the sky is the limit!
