Upcycled Wood Candle Sconce

09 June

I am still making my way through my thrifted finds that need makeovers.

This time I'm upcycling a wooden wall-hanging candle sconce and I'm using hot glue in a very unique way that I think you'll want to try 😉

Supplies

This is the candle holder that I found at Goodwill for $2.99.

I took it all apart and was surprised that the piece of cane webbing was behind the mirror. Maybe it was intended to be an alternative to the mirror? I'll keep the mirror and cane for another project.

Once it was all cleaned up and sanded a little bit, I painted it with Night Sky.

I picked up a couple of these faux tin tiles from the Dollar Store recently and decided to use one of them for this project.

I used the cardboard insert from the sconce and cut a piece from the faux tin to cover it.

I painted it with two coats of Ivory.

Then I used some watered-down Soft Black paint to give it an antique look.

Once I painted on a coat of watered-down paint, I just wiped it off with an old rag, concentrating on the center area and leaving it a bit darker around the edges.

TIP: When you get to the end of your black or white craft paints, add a few drops of water to the empty bottle and shake it up. Black makes great antiquing stain, and white makes great whitewash for small projects.

I put this new insert into the sconce in place of the mirror.

Then I painted the candle cup with ivory.

I always love Mexican folk art pieces, so I decided to give this whole piece a fun folk art paint job. I started by adding some simple flowers to the candle cup.

Upcycled Wood Candle Sconce

I tried a new technique of using hot glue with silicone flower molds to make some little flowers.

Upcycled Wood Candle Sconce

You just fill up the mold with hot glue and give it a few minutes to dry, then pop them out!

You can paint these with regular craft paint, it just takes a couple of coats.

I painted the flowers all different colors and all of the centers yellow, then I aged them with the same watered-down black paint.

I put each one on a rag and blotted them to remove most of the antiquing.

If I thought they were too dark, I dipped my finger in some water and rubbed over the top to remove more of the black.

This is how they turned out.

I added wire stems.

Since the flowers are made out of glue, the wire just poked right in easily.

I filled the candle cup with Creative Paperclay air-dry clay so that I could "plant" the flowers 😃

I don't have a leaf mold so I used Paperclay to make some leaves and a heart.

I painted the clay in the candle cup and the leaves green after they dried.

Here it is with some leaves added.

I used some cardboard packing material that I saved to make some sun rays for the top of the candle sconce. I really liked the texture on the cardboard.

I painted the sun rays yellow and added some wood half-circle beads painted orange at the base of the rays.

Then I added the Paperclay heart and a tiny hot glue flower at the top.

And finally, I added dots, dashes, and swirls all around to get the Mexican Folk Art feel.

So, it is no longer a candle sconce, it is now a wall-hanging art piece! What do you think?
