Today I'm sharing an adorable little upcycle project.
I found a little mushroom house for a fairy garden at the thrift store for $2.99 and while I'm not much into fairy gardens, I couldn't resist picking up this sad little house and giving it a makeover.
Upcycled Garden Mushroom House
Here is what this little house looked like when I found it.
Pretty sad right? The paint is chipping and it's not even a proper mushroom color!
After cleaning it, I sprayed it with a coat of Krylon Fusion white for a base coat.
Then I got to work creating a whimsical little house. The mushroom cap roof is painted Dark Scarlet, the stem is Brown Sugar, and the grass is Hauser Medium Green.
I used Slate Gray for the chimney, the bricks that are showing through the cracks in the mushroom stem, and the rocks around the doorway. I also used a wash of watered-down black over the chimney and then wiped it off.
I wanted this little house to be brighter so I used Canary to paint inside the windows so it looks like the lights are on.
I used Light Cinnamon and Desert Sand to create a wood grain effect to make the mushroom stem look like a tree trunk. I also painted the stems of the small mushrooms with Light Cinnamon.
Underneath the mushroom cap, I used Desert Sand and a whispy brush to create spines.
And Light Cinnamon again to paint the window frames.

The small mushroom on the side is painted with Desert Sand.
And Milk Chocolate, Warm Sunset, and Red Maple for the three on this side.
And finally, I added polka dots to all the mushroom caps except the smallest one and gave the whole thing a clear coat sealer.
Here are some before and after side-by-side comparisons.
This was a fun and rewarding project 🍄 and I had some fun staging it in different areas of our yard for pictures too.
You'd be surprised at how much a sweet little mushroom house brightens up the little corners of the yard.
