DIY Niche TV Console Table

09 May

My daughter and I completed a new project for her house. She has big dreams when it comes to the decor and furniture in her house, like many of us do, and not enough funds to buy everything her little heart desires, also like many of us 😉

Lucky for her, she has a mom who likes to DIY! So together, we created our own version of a TV console table that she liked.

Here is our inspiration photo. This is the Myconos Wooden TV Console from Irregular Lines. It's out of stock right now, but it costs $1,950 😯

We made our DIY version from this bookcase.

She used it like this for a long time while we finished up other projects... not ideal aesthetically speaking.

The first thing we did was rearrange the shelves and create nooks.

We did not buy anything new for this project except for the drywall mud that we used. We used the original shelves from the bookcase and just reconfigured and cut some, then screwed them into the sides of the bookcase.

We used some scrap cardboard to create a template for the arches.

Then I transferred the arches to 1/8" plywood. This is a scrap of wood that I already had.

We didn't worry much about perfection since we wanted a very organic look. I just used my jigsaw to cut them out.

We used wood glue and small finishing nails to attach the front pieces.

I offered to make the tops of the arches a little more rounded like our inspiration piece, but she said she liked it like this.

Once that had dried completely, we used drywall mud to coat the whole thing! I chose the dust control version since I knew we weren't going to try to haul this heavy thing outside when it came time to sand between coats.

The inspiration piece is finished with a white concrete and epoxy mix, but the drywall mud works very well to create a similar look since it's easy to apply and covers a multitude of errors!

It was kind of like frosting a really big cake 😄

We made sure to spread it out as thin as we could so it wouldn't crack when it dried, and we added two coats, sanding between each one.

I used some scrap wood on the ends of the bookcase, but we were left with a large gap that needed to be filled in. I used some scrap foam that came in a shipping box, and we mudded over it.

The drywall mud gets hard when it dries, so there are no worries with using foam for this part.

Once everything was dry, we painted. She chose the same color as her walls in this room.

Do you see the kitty tracks? 😸 She decided to memorialize them forever, so we left them!

And here it is all finished!
