DIY Up-cycled Old Door to Coat Rack

02 August
You may remember when I shared my high school cedar hope chest makeover that I mentioned I had something planned for the wall above it.

My house doesn't have a real entry or foyer, you just open the front door and you are immediately in the living room.

To help create a faux entry this is what I came up with.

up-cycled door
This is made with the leftover part of an old door that I cut down to use for a work bench in my new craft studio. This is the end I cut off and I thought it would make a cute coat rack to help create my entry way.

Supplies Needed
  • Piece of an old door (or a window or other old piece of wood will work too)
  • Shelf or board to create a shelf

Instructions

  1. Paint all the parts (door, shelf brackets (if you have chosen wood), and shelf) the same color.
  2. Mount the brackets to the door at the top the same way you would mount them to a wall. These had keyhole hangers.
  3. Add the coat hooks wherever you want them located on the door. I chose to mount mine in the center part of the door but it would be cute to mount them to the bottom and then hang a cute picture in the open space too!
In an effort to save money and use what I have, I stole the hooks from a closet in my house, the shelf brackets were on my old fence and when I took it down I saved them, the "shelf" is a left over piece from a remodel project!

I shopped my own home and found a few things for the shelf.

The framed butterfly specimen was my daughter's. I didn't like the ugly gold frame so I covered it with grey polka dot Washi tape! The white dried rose is also my daughter's, her boyfriend took it to her at work one day so of course she had to dry it and save it 😊

The chalkboard picture was something I found in the clearance isle at TJ Maxx awhile back, it was only $5!!

I think it looks really good there and helps to create the entry way that my home is missing.

What do you think?

I just have a couple more additions and I'll show you the whole faux entry soon!

  2. You know I'm lovin' it! I thought that might be what you were up to...:) That little area makes a great faux entry. I don't have an entry either but hope to build in something when we remodel one day! Have a wonderful weekend....Vicky

  3. thank you for commenting on my blog. I had to come see what you were doing. I love this little shelf. Someone in my family just bought one for hundreds and it wasn't even as cute. Keep up the good work!
