Trash to Treasure - Thrift Shop Flips

09 July
I have a couple of trash-to-treasure thrift shop flips to share today, I hope you like them :o)

birdcage display and magazine rack makeover

I found this magazine rack at Goodwill a few months ago and thought it would be cute painted. This is what it looked like before.

It looks like it was handmade and someone added some errr... "decorative"?... painting in the way of sunflowers.

Here it is with a fresh coat of cake batter white paint and a little distressing.

Then I stenciled on one side with light grey paint for a subtle look.

I think it's cute now... kind of rustic with the handmade appearance and feminine with all the curves!

Then I had this birdcage. I bought it at a thrift store for $6 quite a long time ago. I painted it black and had it in my booth at the antique mall last fall but it didn't sell. Here is what it looked like then.

It's not particularly old and not particularly interesting... just a plain ol' square shaped birdcage so I decided to make a little display inside.

I started with a real bird's nest that was in the apple tree my dad and I cut down. Don't worry, it had been used one year and was empty this year. I nestled it down in the corner of the cage.

Then I added two old books and tied them to part of the cage with some old rick-rack trim.

But it still needed a little something. I have some parts and pieces of very old children's books and as I was looking through the pages I came upon these little robin pages.

I mounted each page (torn edge and all!) onto some card stock and the tucked them into the bars of the birdcage and added a little gold clothespin to keep them in place.

I'm pretty giddy about how it turned out!

Both of these items are now down at my space at the antique mall!

What do you think?

  8. Love it all. The book bird pages made such a difference. Using rick rack to tie book onto shelf in cage is cute also. Little vignettes make such a big difference in a room.
Whenever our daughter comes over she looks around to see What I've done differently in way of art or vignettes. Very seldom ever buy art, print out what pleases me off internet, use at least couple different ways of hanging art, framing it using thrift store frames or? Not likely to have what anybody else has. Try to use things in different ways to make vignettes as you did your bird cage. Have great weekend

    1. Thank you! That's how I like to decorate too... in unexpected and different ways. I hardly ever buy anything new and if it is a newly made item I probably found it at a thrift store or garage sale! :o)
