Mid-Century Modern Lowboy Dresser Makeover

You guys!!! I finally found the mid-century lowboy dresser I've been looking for to finish my bedroom makeover!

And the best part? It was only $60!!

I had a few minutes the other day to kill some time so I stopped by a nearby thrift shop to see what I could find. This particular thrift shop isn't all that nice... kind of junky in fact and they don't usually have much furniture... so I wasn't even looking for a dresser!

That's how it works right? When you're looking for something you can't find it but the minute you stop, there it is!!

A plain MCM dresser gets a fun new makeover!

So, I promptly paid for it even though I couldn't take it with me that day. I wasn't taking any chances of losing it!

A couple of days later I picked it up. Trust me, it looks better in this picture than it actually was!

The top three drawers have a cool patterned wood veneer that I wanted to bring out so I knew that I wanted to refinish the drawers. And after a little Pinterest inspiration surfing I knew I wanted to paint the shell!

The top is laminate... yes, you can paint laminate!

I removed all the drawers and sanded the shell.

I paid special attention to sanding the laminate top really well so that the paint would adhere.

Then I used a foam roller to prevent brush marks and painted the whole thing with three coats of Country White.

Now, to refinish the drawers...

The wood veneer is thick enough to sand off the existing finish but you have to be careful that you don't sand all the way through it!

Here they are all stripped down!

Look at that pretty pattern!

I used Howard's Feed-N-Wax to bring out the beauty!

You might be able to see that there are a couple of chunks out of the veneer on the top right drawer but since I am keeping this dresser for myself it doesn't bother me.

I'm happy to say that my bedroom is complete now... well... as complete as a compulsive decorator's bedroom can be anyway! 😏

I'll share the results soon!
