Thrift Shop Flip - Upcycled Faux Succulents Planter

I have a fun project to share today, I haven't done any thrift shop flip posts in awhile so I thought it was high time I got busy and created something!

I've had this gigantic metal spoon in the garage for a couple of years now so it was about time it got a makeover.

How to make a faux succulent planter

At first, I was just planning to resell it but then I realized it would be perfect for a planter! I didn't want to take a chance of ruining it since it is made of metal and would most likely rust after time so I decided to use faux succulents instead!

Here is the supply list, I painted the spoon before I started.

So let me show you how to make this!

Cut the Floral Foam Block into smaller pieces that will fit in the spoon. A regular kitchen knife easily cuts it and if you leave it in the plastic while you cut it makes less of a mess.

Use a Hot Glue Gun to glue the pieces into the spoon.

Use Dried Sheet Moss to cover the foam pieces and give it a more natural look and feel.

Just glue it on top of the foam blocks.

Now comes the fun part... arranging the Artificial Succulents!

And then the most fun of all... finding a place to display it!

I hung mine on the side of a kitchen cupboard.

I love how it turned out, what do you think?

It was a very simple project and I already had almost everything I needed... I did purchase the three large succulents specifically for this project but I had the rest.

I love that I don't have to remember to water it (not that succulents take a whole ton of water)!

And I especially love that I don't have to worry about it rusting from moisture.

I have a smaller spoon like this for sale in my space at the antique mall, it would be cute to hold just one or two small plants.

There are some of these big spoons on Etsy here, here, here, oh! and here is a pair!

Do you think you'd like to try making one?

Very pretty! And the part about not having to remember to water it is the best!

Woman you cease to amaze me. I see these things all the time in thrift shops and let them sit because I have no idea what to do with them. Well now I will be buying all I can. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is cute but this is not a new idea. These were made for this purpose!

  4. That's the way it goes right?! Something is popular, it goes away and becomes vintage, then it makes a comeback and people think they've discovered something new! ha ha!
