DIY Outdoor Benches

19 July
Do you remember my Recycled Pallet Outdoor Dining Table I shared weekend before last? (Be sure to check it out if you missed it)!

Well, I made the table but didn't have any chairs that would work with it because it turned out a little taller than I expected... a little mismeasurement faux-pau 😬 You know what I do when I mess up like that? I just go with it! So... benches were in order!!

How to build simple outdoor benches
I made another trip to Home Depot for my supplies.

2 - 8 ft. 4x4 posts
1 - 10 ft. 2x10 plank
16 - 5 in. long screws
Stain

I had them cut it all for me too. I have a nice saw and can cut it myself but if they are going to offer this service for free then why not take advantage of that am I right?!

For these benches, I followed the basic plan from Kleinworthco.com where I got the tutorial for the table. I made a few changes to make them work for my table.

The legs were each cut to 22 inches so when you add on the 2-inch plank they are now 24 inches tall... the perfect height for my table.

In between each 4x4 I put a scrap of 2x4 to help keep the legs from being wobbly and then I screwed them together from each side with the 5 inch long screws, two per side.

Then they will fit on the planks like so (this is upside down of course 😉)

Here is something to know about me... patience is NOT my strong point... but I was a good girl and decided to be patient and stain the pieces before I put them all together. I thought this would be easier in the long run.

I stained them to match the pallet table... black legs...

...and colonial pine seats.

The next day (yes... the next day... it almost killed me to wait that long!) I screwed the tops down to the legs and gave them two coats of clear poly.

I love how it says "Idaho Forest" on the end of one of the seats!

I made these benches so they will tuck under the table out of the way when not in use... that's professional yo!! 😂

You may have also noticed that I gave the sides of the pallet another coat of the black stain to darken them up a bit too.

I have another fun little upcycling project in the works that I'll be using on the table too...

It involves this little toy truck 😃 I can't wait to show you!

  1. Your table and benches look so cute--and professional. I like that you left the Idaho Forest on the end. Can't wait to see your project with the little truck. (I, too, suffer from LPS---Little Patience Syndrome.) Good job!!
