Choosing the Right Size Area Rug

Choosing the Right Size Area Rug
Do you know how to choose the right size area rug for your living room?
I have a couple of tips to help you out, it's really not rocket science!
The mistake most people make is buying a rug that is too small. There are reasons that it happens...
Many stores don't carry much larger than 5' x 7' so if that's all you have to choose from then that's what you buy!
When you do find larger rugs the price can be prohibitive so you try to skimp and get the smaller one thinking it'll be fine.
When Natural Area Rugs contacted me and asked if I'd like to try out one of their rugs I was excited when they offered a little bit larger size! I was also excited because I was actually in the market for a new rug for my living room!
I had a hard time choosing but I finally narrowed it down and chose the Cerdena Shag Rug in Wheat.
My couches are vintage in shades of orange and brown and I thought the wheat color of this rug would compliment them well.
When choosing a rug for your room, you want to make sure that the edge of the rug goes underneath the legs of the couches and/or chairs.

NOT like this:
Having the rug under the furniture like that creates a cozier space and keeps your furniture from looking like it is floating in space. It grounds the room and pulls everything together.
Natural Area Rugs has large sizes... even 8' x 10' and 9' x 12'... and if those still aren't large enough they do custom requests as well!
My new rug is a shag rug which I just love, it's so soft it feels like silk when you have bare feet!
One look at the backing and binding and you can tell this is a quality rug!
Another question I hear a lot is can you still have an area rug even when you have wall-to-wall carpet?
YES! YES! YES!
You may need a quality rug pad made specifically for rug on carpet applications. I have a post about that here: RugPadUSA Carpet Lock Rug Pad Review.
I am really happy with my new rug and I was even happier to discover that Natural Area Rugs has teamed up with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank for the past 3 years to participate in the national #givingtuesday event through which they donate 10% of all sales they make during that event time. The funds are used to help feed people fighting hunger.
I love it when a company has good principals and commitments don't you?
Think of your rug as an investment piece and get the right size and a nice quality rug that will last for years!
My blogging friend Christine over at Little Brags got the same rug but in cream for her guest bedroom makeover. Hop over to see her amazing boho bedroom: A Guest Bedroom Makeover

Oooo--lovely. Your living room is lookin' good! You're right--rugs larger than 5x7 are very hard to find. I'm going to visit this rug website. Thank you.

Tania,
ReplyDeleteI love that rug!!!! It looks so warm and cozy. I definitely struggle to get my area rugs big enough to put under the couch legs. But I will remember this the next time I go to buy a rug for my living room. Maybe I'll get one for Pinecone Cottage. :)
Thanks! Yes, I definitely think Pinecone Cottage needs one! A jute or seagrass rug would be cute in there!
ReplyDeleteHi Tania, oh this is awesome. Well it is also clear that you are on top of things as I am putting things off cuz I can;t get my stuff together...hahah....anywise the rug looks super good and sooo cozy!
ReplyDeleteOhhh and is this a 5x8?
ReplyDeleteThat's funny that we like the same rug... and like you said... it really is a true indication that we both have great taste! And it is a 5x8.
