DIY Laundry Sign

21 May
When I shared my laundry room makeover, you may have noticed the large sign hanging in there and today I'm sharing how I made it!

First, if you missed the makeover posts you can see them here:

It all started with this old red, metal shelf that I used for the last Thrift the Look challenge, DIY Indoor Cactus Garden.

Once I cut it down and took it all apart, I was left with a couple of shelves.

I love the look of old metal signs and I was going to use one for a shop sign. I am still going to but I thought the other would be great for the sign I wanted for my laundry room too!

So, I painted them black.

Then, since the shelf was a little bit warped, I cut a piece of scrap wood to fit inside and screwed the sides of the shelf to it to straighten the whole thing out and added a couple of sawtooth picture hangers.

The following are the steps that I followed and that you can follow to create a sign on pretty much any surface! If you don't have a circuit or silhouette to cut out vinyl letters then this is how you can still make cute signs!

Pick a font you like and then print it in the size you needed.

Use transfer paper in white and just trace over the letters to transfer the words to the surface.

I used a stylus to trace over the letters but a pen or pencil would work too.

This is what it looks like after tracing over the letters.

Then just fill in the letters with paint!

Since I'm painting white letters on a black background it took several coats... about three! You can see the progression here... first coat to third.

It did take a little time since I had to do so many coats but by the time I reached the end the first letters were dry so I could just keep movin'!
