Upcycled Yo-Yo Lampshade

20 April

April is earth month. I take great pride in the fact that I'm doing my part to help the earth by recycling using curbside pickup that is offered by the city that I live in and also recycling in a different way by shopping at thrift stores and incorporating vintage items into my home.

We are celebrating earth month during this month's Pinterest Challenge, our theme is upcycled/eco-friendly projects! Recycled clothing was suggested and so that's what I've gone with for my project.

If you are new here, the Pinterest Challenge is where some blogging friends and I recreate something that we have pinned. It's so easy to spend all your time on Pinterest pinning away but never creating any of these projects. This motivates us to get creating, I hope it'll motivate you as well.

I am joining these talented bloggers for this project!

I'll share my project first and then you can use the links at the end of the post to check out the other ladies' projects! I'm always excited to see what everyone has made 😊

I was inspired by THIS pin.

And I already had a box full of vintage yo-yos! I picked them up at an estate sale years ago and have been hanging on to them ever since.

Obviously, I didn't make these yo-yos, I don't think I would ever have the patience to make this many 😂

They are made with old clothing though so they fit right into this month's earth day-themed Pinterest Challenge!

Here are the rest of my supplies. I picked up two tiny little lampshades recently at a local thrift store for $1.00 each.

And I found a whole box of these vintage electric candles at an estate sale for $8.00. (There are some lampshades in the box too but they have Christmas designs on them and I didn't think they'd work for this project.)

This project was so easy! I gave the candle a coat of pretty robin's egg blue spray paint and then picked out some of the smaller yo-yos in spring colors. I used hot glue and glued some of the yo-yos with the back showing and others with the gathered fronts showing in no certain order.

Then I used vintage white buttons and glued them over the yo-yos that had the gathered sides showing and added a blue velvet bow!

I replaced the orange/red lightbulb with a clear one and then popped the new lampshade on it!

I added it to my spring buffet 😊

  2. Your lamp is so adorable!! I've always loved yo-yos. It would look so sweet in a nursery or child's room as a night light. Pinned to my craft ideas board.
