Repurposed Pasta Drying Rack

24 July
Today is "Do It Over Designers" day! This is always a fun day, where a group of my blogging friends and I all find something old or unused and do it over into something new.

I will share my project and there will be links to the other ladies' projects at the end!

These items can be found in closets, barns, garages, yard sales, thrift stores, you name it. I happened to find my project candidate in the back of a kitchen cupboard at my boyfriend's house!

You don't need much to create a piece like this!

Supplies Needed:

I almost donated this rack but I opened it up to look at it and when I saw all those raw wood pieces... both round and square dowels, an idea came to mind, I could create art it! Don't believe me?? Read on!!

I found a piece of scrap wood from another project to use as a base and I started by just playing around with laying the dowels around on the wood until I figured out what I wanted to make!

I decided to make a little mountainscape!

I used wood glue and began creating mountains with the square dowels. I glued them down without cutting, I thought it would be easier to cut them off flush with the edge after they were glued onto the base.

I used various objects to hold down the dowels as they were drying.

When I needed to make mitered points, I marked them with a pencil and then used my belt sander instead of a saw.

After the glue dried for each set of dowels, I took it out to my scroll saw and trimmed the ends off. I used the trimmed-off ends to continue creating my scene. Once I had them all adhered to the base and trimmed, I filled the holes with wood filler.

Next, I stained the different parts of the scene with watered-down craft paints.

I used a sponge brush and watered down paint for each area, butter yellow for the sunshine🌞

Cloudless for the blue sky.

And burnt umber for the mountains 🗻🗻

I cut and stained some scrap wood to use for a frame.

I attached them with wood glue.

And here it is all finished!! What do you think??

I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, I never would have imagined a pasta drying rack could be so cute!! 😃

It just goes to show... don't think for a minute that there isn't some way to upcycle or repurpose A.N.Y.T.H.I.N.G!!

I haven't settled on a display spot in my home yet.

In hindsight, I wish I would have made the divider stick between the sky and sunshine a round dowel instead of a square one but I still think it's super cute!

  7. Hello! I'm crazy about your creative ideas. I could not even think that such beauty can be made from pasta, it is just amazing and not trivial, and most importantly, that everyone can do it. I definitely know now what I'm going to do next weekend. Thank you for inspiring me and your readers to creative exploits. It seems to me that this is exactly what is missing now.
