Upcycled Lamp - Urban Outfitters Knockoff Face Lamp

25 September

Today is another Do-It-Over-Designers (DOD) challenge! If you are new to LVC, the DODs are a group of blogging friends and we get together virtually every month. We take something old, dated, or worn out and do it over to give it a new purpose or refreshed look.

I will share my project with you first and then you'll be able to check out the other ladies' projects, k? 😃

This project also marks the completion of the thrift shop flips lineup I've been working my way through. It took waaay longer than I thought! haha!

I thrifted the lamp and lampshade from Goodwill, the lamp was $4.99 and the shade was $2.99. I also bought two blocks of Sculpey clay for $2.49 each from the craft store.

I saw this Ceramic Face Lamp online at Urban Outfitters and thought it would be pretty easy to knock off my own version and when I saw the price of $99 😲, I knew I could recreate it at a fraction of that price.

I used the clay to create the face details... ears, eyes, and a nose... and then baked them following the instructions on the clay packaging.

Once they were dried and cooled, I glued them to the lamp with E6000 glue (I sanded the lamp first to remove some of the shinyness so the paint would stick to it).

And then painted it with some baking soda paint I made to give it a pottery feel.

I gave it two coats.

Lastly, I gave it a couple of coats of clear spray finish to protect it.

Teehee! Did you notice I gave him some earrings?? I used these washers that were left over after I dismantled the old porch light from this project: Repurposed Porch Light with Three Decor Ideas, and I just stuck them into the clay before baking.

Here's the comparison:

My lamp cost $10.47
  • thrifted lamp - $4.99
  • thrifted shade - $2.99
  • Sculpey clay - $2.49 (I only used one block of clay)
  • E6000 glue - already had
  • Paint - made myself with leftover paint and baking soda
  • Clear spray sealer - already had

The Urban Outfitters lamp costs $99 (currently on sale for $59.99)

And that completes this lineup!

  1. Your lamp is so much better than the inspiration lamp, Tania, and the earrings? Love them! Great makeover!

  2. Wonderful recycle Tania. The earrings were a perfect finish for the lamp. I've been wanting to try the baking soda paint for a while. It adds so much texture.

  3. Oh my gosh what an ADORABLE lamp. You knockedoff this one right out of the park, Tania! Love the cute earring addition too.

  4. I love him! He has much more personality than the Urban Outfitters one! And the paint with a little texture is perfect!
