Mirror Upcycle Thrift Shop Flip

If you follow me on Facebook then you might know already that I rediscovered some thrifted mirrors that I had completely forgotten about... the makeover was even started and then I don't know what happened... squirrel! 😂

Well, I got busy and cranked this upcycle out!

Here is what they looked like when I first found them at the thrift store, I have two of them.

I wanted to give them a boho feel so first I painted them gold. The mirrors won't come out so I had to tape them off.

Then I searched around my craft hoard supply and found some rub-on decals and water-slide decals that I thought would work. Yes, the water-slide decals are made for your skin... like the old-fashioned temporary tattoos that we used to get in the candy vending machines, but they will work for crafts too!

I specifically liked the message on this rub-on decal.

I cut it apart and used it on both mirrors.

These are really easy to apply, I just used a pen cap to rub over the backing, releasing the words onto the mirror.

Then slowly peel the backing off, leaving just the letters. You then use the papery side of the backing and rub gently over the rub-on. This kind of burnishes them and ensures the letters are fully stuck down.

Next, I chose a couple of feathers from the water-slide decals. To adhere these, you lay them face down and then cover with a wet sponge or paper towel for about 30 seconds. Just until the backing is thoroughly wet.

Then, just slide the backing right off. Don't try to lift the backing off like the rub-on decals, these will slide.

At this point, they were looking pretty cute but not boho enough so I decided some macrame details were in order.

I used some off-white string I had and started with six lark's head knots on the bottom of each mirror.

Then I added a row of square knots.

I added another row of square knots underneath the first.

And then I used the half-knot spiral which is basically just half of the square knot over and over, it makes the yarn twist.

I wanted just one more little touch that would tie it all together, so I rolled out some Sculpey oven-bake clay and made stars and moons to go with the quote.

I just drew them onto some scrap paper and used those as my templates.

And cut them out of the clay by tracing around them with a sharp clay tool, a butter knife would work too.

Poke holes in the top for hanging and bake according to the package directions.

I painted them gold as well and hung them below the macrame.

I think these turned out pretty cute, what do you think?

Jeez, mirrors are so hard to photograph!! 😒
