Dollar Store Christmas Diorama

06 December

I found a little house-shaped shadow box at The Dollar Store recently...

Then I found some cute colorful trees in Target's dollar spot and I knew it was a sweet Christmas vignette waiting to happen! 😍

It's really hard for me to photograph all the supplies because most of my projects evolve as I go.

I start with some basic supplies but oftentimes (as is the case here), I end up using more... like glitter, a little plastic deer, and some plastic bells.

But these are the basic supplies I used.

Step 1: Cut the paper to fit inside the shadow box frame.

NOTES:

  • My Dollar Tree had these house-shaped shadow boxes but I do not see them in their online store. You can use any shape shadow box if you can't find these.
  • You can use any kind of paper inside the shadow box. I used some vintage Christmas wrapping paper I had but old wallpaper would also work, or scrapbook paper, or even an old calendar page!

To cut the paper, place the shadow box onto the paper and cut around it using a utility knife. Trim with scissors for a better fit.

Step 2: Adhere the paper to the back of the shadow box.

NOTE: my shadow box had a blue striped background already that shows through the thin wrapping paper a little bit. You may not have this problem depending on what your shadow box looks like and the thickness of the paper you choose. I didn't mind the stripes showing through but you can paint the back first if this is a problem.

Once you have the paper cut to size, adhere it to the back of the shadow box. I used Mod Podge but white craft glue would work equally well.

Step 3: Add the trees.

NOTE: I found these packages of mini trees in Target's dollar spot but I included a link to a bunch of options that you can find on Etsy in the supply box above!

Adhere the trees to the base with glue. I used heavy-duty E6000 but really any kind will work... hot glue, white craft glue, etc.

These colorful trees are so cute and they matched the wrapping paper perfectly!

Step 4: Add additional details and glitter!

You can add anything else you please, I chose a little plastic deer, another tree, and some plastic bells that I painted to coordinate.

And then I glittered the bottom and edge (I also glittered the bells at the last minute)!

I think this turned out super cute and it was so easy, you could even do this craft with kids or grandkids!

  2. Really cute! Our dollar stores don't carry such colourful bottle brush trees, I have to dye them myself! What kind of paint did you use on the bells? They look like they have a nice coat applied onto them and I love the look. I adore the vintage wrapping paper! Nice job!

    1. Thanks Pam! I got the bright colored trees in Target's Dollar Spot. I just used regular craft paint (Decoart I think).
