Upcycled Star Candle Holder - Thrift Shop Flip

10 December

Today I'm sharing a super easy thrift shop flip project that involves a metal candle holder, clay, and paint!

I will be moving right before Christmas so I'm not really decorating this year.

I did put up some white twinkle lights and a small tree on my mantle though because they were easy to get to and I can't stand not having any decorations up!

I am adding this to my mantle display too.

I have been seeing very organic shaped metal sculptures like this lately in some of my favorite blogger's and Youtuber's homes.

Here are a few examples:

When I saw this metal star candle holder at Goodwill recently, it reminded me of these.

You can see it was just $3.99 at Goodwill.

I used a hack saw to cut off the part where the candle would sit.

Then I used some oven-bake clay to cover the star.

To cover the star with the clay, roll out a long rope.

Then flatten it out with your fingers... it should look a little like a tapeworm 😂

Then just start wrapping it around.

Once it's all covered, lay it onto a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and smooth out any areas you want. You can dab your finger in water and then rub it over the clay to help smooth it out.

I wanted my star to be black and I didn't have black clay so I chose to spray paint mine.

And then I rubbed dirt on it while the paint was still a little wet to give it an aged pottery appearance. I then sprayed it with clear sealer.

And voila!! I have my own sculpture that is reminiscent of those high-end (and expensive) sculptures!

  1. Boy am I out of the loop, I didn't know these were a thing. Your star candle is very cool and like you had intended, very organic looking. Clever using dirt to give it an aged pottery look. It looks very authentic, Tania!
