A Miniature Boho Scene in a Repurposed Alarm Clock

22 January

It's been kind of quiet here on the blog lately.

We've been so busy with our new fixer-upper that I hardly have time to think! I altered my shift at my day job so I work from 5am to 3pm which leaves me a couple hours of daylight still that I can go over there and work.

We've had all kinds of problems. I'm just thankful that we got a homeowner's warranty included in our purchase of the fixer-upper because we've already used it twice and may need it more.

But that's a story for another day, today is Do-It-Over-Designers (DOD) day! If you are new here, DOD is a group of designers who take something old and/or unused and 'do it over' into something new. These items can be found in closets, barns, garages, yard sales, thrift stores, you name it!

I missed last month and I was so sad because I really love participating! First I'll share my project and then you'll be able to check out all the other awesome projects from the other participants!

I had this thrifted alarm clock in my stash and had always intended to create a little vignette inside.

Here are the rest of my supplies for this project... a coffee stir stick, some scraps of vintage velvet and a scrap of batting, a plastic pop bottle lid, a wooden fan, a tissue box, a toothpaste lid, and the cardboard clock insert!

The first step was to get all the clock parts out so that I am left with just the shell. It came apart pretty easily with just a few screws.

I sprayed the whole thing sunny yellow and then reassembled it using E6000 glue to reattach the glass front.

**Side note: I stopped at a thrift store yesterday for something for the house and saw another alarm clock like this but I passed it up because we are moving and I don't need to be buying more craft supplies! But it is killing me, I may have to go get it 😖

Next, I needed a flat platform inside the clock on which to create my little boho scene.

I used an upholstery fabric sample and a scrap of cardboard to create a little carpet for my scene. As you can tell, I stacked several scraps of cardboard together to create a thicker surface.

Then I used hot glue to add it to the clock.

I let some fabric fall over the edge of the platform so it would cover the gap.

I wanted to create a little living room scene so I needed a chair.

I used the plastic pop bottle lid, some scraps of vintage brown velvet, and some random wooden buttons to create a boho chair.

First create the chair seat:

Step 1. Cut a circle of fabric and a slightly smaller circle of batting. Lay the bottle cap top-down onto the batting and fabric.

Steps 2. thru 4. Glue the fabric to the inside of the lid.

Step 5. Cut a strip of fabric long enough to go around the lid and glue it along the edge, right sides together.

Steps 6. thru 8. Fold it over so the right side shows and glue it to the inside of the lid.

Next, create a chair back and base:

Step 1. Cut a half-circle from a scrap of cardboard.

Steps 2. and 3. Cut a matching half-circle from fabric and glue it to the cardboard.

Steps 4. thru 6. Center the chair seat on the half-circle and glue it down to form the chair back.

Steps 7. and 8. Glue two buttons together to form a chair base and add a circle of fabric to the bottom of the chair.

Glue the chair base to the chair bottom.

I made a little pillow with a scrap of yellow velvet.

I just glued the sides in and then rolled it up and glued the seam.

I glued it into the chair so it wouldn't fall out at some point after it's all sealed shut and I mushed it down a little bit to make it look like someone had been sitting there.

I then decided a floor lamp was needed! I made it from the wooden fan, a coffee stir stick, and a wooden button (and bead not pictured).

Step 1. Cut 4 sides from the fan blades.

Step 2. thru 4. Dip the edges in wood glue, attach them together, and allow them to dry. (Not pictured: add a top to the shade in the same manner).

Step 5. (not pictured: glue a small bead to one end of the coffee stir stick) and glue the other end into a wooden button. Glue the bead end into the lampshade.

I used this Super Easy Cutter by Midwest Products for cutting the coffee stir stick and fan blades. It works SO well for creating miniatures when you need to cut small pieces of wood, you can cut miters with it too!

Then I wanted a tall plant to fill out this mini scene.

I used a toothpaste lid for the planter.

And I picked this little snippet of greenery up off the floor once at Walmart, it was perfect to create a mini fiddle leaf fig!!

A tiny ceramic kitten was the final touch.

For the back, I used a piece of this tissue box... they have some great designs these days!!

For the inside, I used a piece of peel and stick wallpaper.

And then I made a little embellishment for the outside.

I'm so giddy about how this turned out 😁

  2. Be still my miniature loving heart! This is just the cutest miniature diorama and clever use of recycled finds. I love the yellow color you painted the clock too. My vote is that you need to go back for that second clock because, speaking for myself, I want to see another amazing alarm clock miniature!
