Flipping Thrifted and Dollar Store Finds

20 February

Today I have some fun thrift flips that I created for my new house to share with you and I created a video too!

I hope you've been enjoying the videos I've been creating. It's a labor-intensive process let me tell you! That's why it takes so long for me to create them, but I think I'm getting better at it and learning ways to make it easier on myself.

Today's projects are actually two thrift shop flips with an old footstool and a woven basket and one Dollar Store hack with some frames and stickers.

One of the aspects of shooting a video and creating a blog post to go with it is remembering to stop and take pictures that I can use in the post!

One of my readers suggested using some screenshots from the video which is such a great idea and one I hadn't thought of, so you'll see some of that here.

If you have any tips for me, please let me know in the comments!

Here is the video, I hope you enjoy 😊 The rest of the blog post portion is below.

Upcycled basket

Supplies Needed

Here is the basket I found, it's nice but needed a little pizzazz!

It has a design woven into the sides that I thought would be cute painted.

I used some black craft paint to color the design on the basket.

I did try using a Sharpie marker but it just didn't provide the coverage that you get with paint. It was hard to get the marker into the tiny crevices and it would have required a couple of coats.

I also painted the designs on the lid.

I used my Clover pompom maker to make a pompom handle for the lid. I went over how to use it in the video but I've also got a blog post about that here: How to Use the Clover Pom-Pom Maker.

I used a large needle to add the pompom to the lid and that's all it took to create a cute little boho basket!

I think it would be nice with a color on the design instead of black too.

I wasn't sure if the next project was going to work but I think it turned out great in the end!

Repurposed Footstool

Supplies Needed

If your footstool has an upholstered top like mine does, you'll want to remove the fabric and padding.

Next, give it a light sanding just to remove any shininess and give the paint a good surface to grip.

I chose a pretty yellow ochre color and it took about 3 coats to get good coverage.

I wanted to add some boho details with some reed to make little scallops along the bottom edge of the stool.

I've used this reed before in another project too: Copy Cat Sunburst Mirror DIY

Cut pieces of the reed to the size you want. I cut mine to about 5 inches long and then put them in a bowl of water to soak. It only takes a few minutes for them to become pliable enough to be able to bend without breaking.

Mark the bottom of the stool about every 2 inches and then do the same between each of those marks.

Use a drill bit the same size as the reed and mark it with tape so that you drill the same depth each time.

Use wood glue to glue the ends of the reed pieces into the holes.

I also added wood beads to every other scallop.

Fill any holes in the top with wood filler.

You can stencil the top if you'd like or leave it plain.

Here is what mine looked like at this point.

I also added a braid of reed around the edge of the stool. I think it just gave my stool a finished look but your's may not need that.

I really wasn't sure how this was going to turn out and I thought about abandoning this project several times but I kept going and I'm so glad I did!

The last project is a Dollar Store hack.

Upcycled Dollar Store Art

Supplies Needed

This project is so easy! I picked up three frames and a package of wall decals in a cute boho design. The decals come 4 per sheet so I still have one left and this entire project only cost me $3.75!

Actually, the art that comes in these frames can be sorta cute... sometimes... kinda... in a Dollar Store sorta way, but I wanted to use the decals 😊

I chose a pretty pink spray paint for my frames.

Next just put the wall decals on a plain white sheet of paper and pop it back into the frame.

What did you think about these projects?! Which one is your favorite?

  1. Love the boho vibe of each one of these flips but the stool makeover has my heart going pitter patter. Very clever and creative adding the reed detail and I'm loving the color and stencil detail too. I can't wait to see it in your new house!
