Upcycled Globe Thrift Shop Flip
02 February
How do you feel about the obsession that so many people seem to have with globes?
Do you think it's still a thing or has it become one of those dated home decor trends of the past?
I still love them and I used to have a collection of both large and small ones in my home but I've downsized and now only seem to have the small ones.
When I found this one at the thrift store I knew I wanted to upcycle it and transform it into a cute home decor accent.
Upcycled Globe Thrift Shop Flip
I loved the marble and wood base but it had some damage to the paper covering.

Supplies Needed for This Project:
- World globe
- Mod Podge
- Sponge brush
- Self-healing cutting mat
- Utility Knife
- Scissors
- Patterened paper
The first thing I did was take it apart by unscrewing the top pieces that held the globe onto the stand.
I DIY'd another globe a couple of years ago that had a cardboard base. Check out that post here to see how the paper was removed: Naked Button Globe - A DIY Globe Upcycle.
It was so weird because it came off almost immediately, there was really no "soaking" involved at all, the pieces just slid off! I used a razor blade to remove the stickers from the bottom.
I sprayed it with some satin black spray paint and then put it back on the stand for the next steps.
I really hadn't planned too far ahead with this project...
I knew I wanted to add flowers to my globe but I wasn't sure if I wanted to paint them or decoupage them onto the globe.
I went through my paper stash and found a scrap of wrapping paper that I just love. I thought the flowers would be perfect.
I used very few other supplies for this project.
I cut out some of the flowers with scissors and a utility knife, the self-healing mat just ensures you don't cut through your table or counters.
So, while I guess I'm kind of over having a collection of globes in their original form in my house, I'm totally ok with having a cute globe like this!

Very cute way to update the globe. Not sure if they're still a "thing" or not, but i still enjoy them and all the interesting things people do with them.

DeleteI've got a larger one sitting on the queue. I like your little globe way more because it's perfect for bookcase decor. Love how you upcycled it, Tania and I like your idea of having a collection of mini globes on display.
ReplyDeleteThank you Marie! Can't wait to see what you do with yours!

Thank you, from one creative mind to another! ;o)
DeleteThis is beautiful Tania - at first glance I though it was hand painted :). Good to know you can soak the paper right off _ wouldn't think to try that!
