Upcycled Globe Thrift Shop Flip

02 February

How do you feel about the obsession that so many people seem to have with globes?

Do you think it's still a thing or has it become one of those dated home decor trends of the past?

I still love them and I used to have a collection of both large and small ones in my home but I've downsized and now only seem to have the small ones.

When I found this one at the thrift store I knew I wanted to upcycle it and transform it into a cute home decor accent.

I loved the marble and wood base but it had some damage to the paper covering.

I think this may have been from TJMaxx or Tuesday Morning originally and wasn't very much then but the $6.99 Goodwill price seemed even better for something that I knew could be so much cuter!

Supplies Needed for This Project:

The first thing I did was take it apart by unscrewing the top pieces that held the globe onto the stand.

I could tell that the globe itself was plastic underneath the paper but if you are recreating this project and your globe is not plastic, you will want to skip this step for sure and just peel the paper off!

I DIY'd another globe a couple of years ago that had a cardboard base. Check out that post here to see how the paper was removed: Naked Button Globe - A DIY Globe Upcycle.

But for this project, I soaked it in water to remove the paper.

It was so weird because it came off almost immediately, there was really no "soaking" involved at all, the pieces just slid off! I used a razor blade to remove the stickers from the bottom.

Here is how the globe was looking at this point.

I sprayed it with some satin black spray paint and then put it back on the stand for the next steps.

I really hadn't planned too far ahead with this project...

I knew I wanted to add flowers to my globe but I wasn't sure if I wanted to paint them or decoupage them onto the globe.

I went through my paper stash and found a scrap of wrapping paper that I just love. I thought the flowers would be perfect.

I used very few other supplies for this project.

I cut out some of the flowers with scissors and a utility knife, the self-healing mat just ensures you don't cut through your table or counters.

Once I had chosen and cut out the flowers I wanted, the rest of the project took about 2 minutes 😃... you just brush a thin layer of Mod Podge on the back of each flower and place it on the globe where you want it, pressing down with your fingers so it lies flat.

I spaced my flowers randomly but made sure I had one near the rod the globe rests on and tried to cover a large portion of the seam where the plastic meets with another.

Then you just put the rest of the globe pieces back on the end of the rod and you're done!

Right now mine is on a shelf in my kitchen but I'm not quite sure yet where this will live in my new house... somewhere though! 😉

It would be cute to have a grouping of a few different-sized globes in different, but coordinating colors and flower designs.

So, while I guess I'm kind of over having a collection of globes in their original form in my house, I'm totally ok with having a cute globe like this!

  1. Very cute way to update the globe. Not sure if they're still a "thing" or not, but i still enjoy them and all the interesting things people do with them.

  2. I've got a larger one sitting on the queue. I like your little globe way more because it's perfect for bookcase decor. Love how you upcycled it, Tania and I like your idea of having a collection of mini globes on display.

  4. This is beautiful Tania - at first glance I though it was hand painted :). Good to know you can soak the paper right off _ wouldn't think to try that!
