Repurposed Salt and Pepper Shakers

10 July

Do you ever look at something and immediately see something else?

That happened to me recently with some salt and pepper shakers that I found at the thrift store.

They were a set but both missing the lids and when I looked at them I saw something completely different than salt and pepper shakers!

I worked on my vision between projects on our fixer-upper house and I'm ready to share, I'll be curious to hear if you saw what I saw 😉

So what do you see? Before you scroll, figure out what you see... are they still just salt and pepper shakers?

Or do you see something else? Maybe a tiny vase? Yes, I saw that too... anything else?

Ok, now scroll down to see what I saw, and then let me know in the comments what your vision was.

Actually, the first thing I thought of when I saw these shakers was my grandma because I have her set of dishes that match these. These are candlewick glassware and they were made by Imperial Glass Corporation, in business from 1904 to 1984. The design was inspired by the embroidery technique known as candle-wicking, read more about these dishes here.

These were just .49 cents each so I couldn't pass them by.

The base of these reminded me of Cindy Lou Who!!

The Grinch is my all-time favorite Christmas Cartoon 😀 but I did not make Cindy Lou, I don't know why... next time I find these I'll make her! Here is what came to life with one of those shakers...

Isn't she cute?! Now let me show you how I made her... then there's another little surprise with what I made with the other shaker at the end so keep reading!

Supplies I used:

First, I taped off the whole little jar except the bottom balls and painted it with Krylon Satin Ballet Slipper spray paint.

Then I filled the jar with pink beads for a little fun 😊

I made her head from oven-bake clay.

I just rolled out three little balls, one large from flesh-tone clay and two small from brown. It looks a little funny before painting in her hair... kind of like a panda bear! 😆

Once the head was baked, I painted in the rest of her hair to match her Princess Leia buns!

Her arms are made of vintage pipe cleaners!

I used a dab of E6000 glue at the back of her neck to attach the pipe cleaner arms.

Then, I added a sweet little face... little pink cheeks, eyes, and heart-shaped lips 😘

I used some vintage lace trim for her dress. This lace had the tiny little flower details on both sides but I trimmed them off one side of the piece I used for the neckline and used them for buttons.

Then I gave her some little hands to hold a sunny yellow flower!

She also got a little lacey flower in her hair. I sealed her painted parts with a clear sealer to protect them.

Now for the little surprise... I thought she needed a friend 😁

He is made exactly the same but I used red beads inside, and little boy details like blue rick-rack, tiny little buttons, and a bow tie.
