Polymer Clay Snowmen Figurines Tutorial

27 October

Hello, hello! How are you enjoying the fall weather? It has finally cooled off here but since the summer weather held on for so long, it tricked me and I didn't get as many fall crafts done as I wanted to!

I just finished a cute little pumpkin guy for today's tutorial but since it's almost too late, I used my own tutorial and made snowmen too!

So, the video is for a pumpkin but it's the same steps and process to make the little snowmen. 😊 The directions and pictures below are for the snowmen.

Supplies Needed

Here is the pumpkin tutorial!

Crafts like these are why I save tiny scraps of fabrics, laces, ribbons, and mini bits and bobs!! I always have so much fun sorting through my collections of goodies!

To make the snowmen, you'll need some oven-bake polymer clay and wooden craft clothespins. I had two of the little bases but you don't have to have those, you can make your snowmen hanging instead but the second link for clothespins in the supply list above has the stands included.

Roll a ball of clay about 1 1/2" in diameter for the head and then press indentations into it for the eyes and nose. I linked some clay sculpting tools but you can also use the end of a pen or pencil to do this.

Then make a nose with orange clay by rolling a thin rope. Make sure it is tapered at the end so it resembles a carrot. Push it into the hole you made for the nose.

Bake according to package directions.

While the head is baking, paint the clothespin and base white.

And then add their pipe cleaner arms. Leave the arms long until you get the bodies made, then you'll know how long to cut the arms.

To make the body, pick out a scrap of fabric and cut it about 3 1/2" x 6".

Fold it in half, right sides together, and stitch up the side. You could glue it instead if you want to.

Then turn it right-side-out and stitch a gathering stitch around the top and bottom edges. Cut two small slits in the sides for the pipe cleaner arms and put it on the clothespin. Gather the top edge, add a bit of stuffing, and then gather up the bottom edge.

Add the head.

Then paint the eyes with black craft paint. I made some of the eyes just little slashes to look like their eyes are closed. For the others, just paint the bottom half of the eyes.

Blush the cheeks.

I used decorating chalks but I could not find a link to these anywhere, I've had mine forever. Your blush will work just find!! Or you can use a very dry brush and red or pink paint.

Then add a collar with the same gathering technique you used to make his body and add the stand.

If your snowman is going to hang, add the hanger to the back. You can use a pipe cleaner, twine, ribbon, or wire. I covered up the knotted and glued area with a wooden heart.

Now it's time for the details!... details, details, details!! Have fun with it!

I used tiny pom-poms...

... small rick-rack trim...

... and I painted polka dots...

They each got a snowflake on their head...

The eyes should be dry by now so go in with the end of a toothpick and dot a little white highlight in the eyes, on the cheeks, and drag one down the nose (see picture above).

I made some angel wings for my hanging snowmen with paper baking cup liners...

I just folded one in half and cut it in two then glued it to the back with hot glue.

The fabric on this one is my favorite, it's from an old pillowcase.

He is holding some vintage faux candy but it looks like balloons to me, and I love his crooked little grin.
