This year I'm decorating my tree with a Scandinavian theme.

I bought a 6 ft. Flocked Tree from Walmart last year but didn't get to put it up because we bought our fixer-upper house and we had started moving in and tearing the house apart around this time last year.

I love the snowy-looking flocked branches so I decided a Scandinavian theme would be perfect for this tree.

I'll be sharing my tree soon, but in the meantime, I wanted to share how to make a Christmas tree skirt with sweaters!

Supplies Needed to Make Your Own:
  • Thrifted sweaters (I used 3 but you may need more depending on the size of your tree)
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors and pins
  • Matching thread
  • Matching embroidery floss and a large needle

This really was quite easy to make, I created a video sharing my process and you can read it step-by-step below.

I found all my sweaters at one thrift store. I used three sweaters and they cost about $19 for all three. I think it's nice to use sweaters with different patterns, textures, and thicknesses but all the same color.

First, cut off the sleeves (be sure to save them for another project! 😉)

Then cut them open at the seams (sides and shoulders).

You will have a front and a back with which to cut the pieces for your skirt. If you are lucky, you may have found one that has a button or zip front. That will make it so you can put your tree skirt around the tree after the tree is up so no more worries about forgetting!!

How many times have you put up your tree, decorated it, and then realized son-of-a-B... I forgot the skirt!!!😂

Cut a triangle shape out of each sweater piece. I cut my triangles with a flat top and I didn't go all the way to the neckline because my tree is smaller. If you have a larger tree, then you can include the neckline.

Pin two triangles together right-sides-together and stitch them together with a zigzag stitch.

If your sweaters are different designs like mine, make sure to alternate the designs so that you don't have two of the same together. NOTE: If you have a sweater that zips or buttons, you WILL want those two pieces together at the end.

Continue pinning and stitching the pieces together until you reach the last one, then stitch it to the first piece so that you have a skirt.

You are almost done!!

Next, fold the top edge down and zigzag around that edge. If you included the necklines in yours, then you can skip this step because the necks will already have a finished edge.

Now, run a gathering stitch around that edge with the embroidery floss and a large needle. Do not attempt to do this with a regular thread, it will not be strong enough.

A gathering stitch is just a long, simple stitch all around without stopping. You do NOT knot the ends and you leave the floss tails hanging so that you can pull both sides to gather it up.

Pull the floss tails to gather up the skirt and then knot it.

  • If you do NOT have a sweater that buttons or zips, then just tie the ends of the floss into a knot.

  • If you DO have a sweater that buttons or zips in the mix, then knot each end of the floss individually so that you can fully open the skirt.

That's it! Now go put your pretty new skirt on your tree!!

Of course, when you get all the presents wrapped and under the tree, you can barely see it! 😂

I still have a few ornaments and a tree topper to make, then I'll be sharing the finished tree.

What kind of tree skirt do you have?

If you enjoyed this post, I'd love it if you'd share it!

  1. I love that instead of buying a tree skirt you recycled sweaters to make one. Very clever idea using a sweater with a zipper (or button closure). We switched to a galvanized collar this year and regretfully what I didn't take into consideration is that you can't put any presents under the tree! A real problem with four grandkids to spoil.

  2. Hi Tania, when I was decorating my tree the other day I took out the ornament you made one year and sent out. It was a sweet snowman face painted on a juice can lid I think. I just love it and it goes on my tree every year. Hugs, Sandi

    1. Aww, I remember those little snowmen! I wish I could do something like that every year but I'm kinda scared that I wouldn't be able to keep up if I did that now! haha!
