We have the tiniest bathroom on earth in our basement and it was in desperate need of a makeover!!

I partnered up with Zazous Online for the flooring that I needed to bring my vision for this bathroom to life.

These are the things I've gathered up for the room so far. I decided to go really bold here!

I found the little basket with colorful straw flowers at Goodwill and that's what I designed the whole room around! Sounds a little crazy, doesn't it?! I don't know... I just really loved that little basket! 😂

I chose the bold wallpaper first. Then I sourced the flooring I liked to coordinate with it (on the left). I found the Opal House rug and the shower curtain (originally from Target) at Goodwill brand new!

I created a video that shows how we got from that hideous mess to where we are now!

Let me show you the before pictures of this bathroom so you can get a real idea of just how far we've come!!

This bathroom sink was so shallow that even with just a weak stream of water it splashed all over, and please tell me how you are supposed to use that towel bar next to the sink 😕

The wood on the bottom of the vanity was discolored most likely from water splashing out of the shower behind the door.

It had a standard 90's medicine cabinet which I am removing. This is the bathroom in our basement, not the main bathroom that we use so we don't need a medicine cabinet here.

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

The floors are just basic sheet vinyl and in my opinion, they are ugly... not to mention the rubber baseboard molding! This is the same stuff (vinyl and rubber molding) that was in the kitchen and the laundry room and I'm happy to report that it is all gone now!!

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

This is the view from the toilet. Behind that door is the laundry room. I am removing this door and will be DIYing a sliding door because this door is just awkward.

This tiny bathroom has a shower about the same size as the rest of the room! We will use this in the summer when we come in from the pool.

Now that I've turned your stomachs with the hideous before pictures, let's get on to the fun stuff!! DEMO!!

There's much more to see in the video so be sure to watch that but we removed the old vanity and sink and donated those to Habitat for Humanity. We removed the toilet temporarily so I could get the new floor down easily (plus it just feels better to get a new wax ring down and a new toilet seat)! And I removed that medicine cabinet, the towel bar, and the old shower curtain rod.

Then I scrubbed the walls and painted the wainscoting, the trim, and the windowsill Polar Bear white by Behr (the same color we've used in the rest of the house).

... and then we set to work removing that floor.

Tobin did the majority of this... he's my demo man and handles the tedious projects that drive me to rip out my hair! 😂

Finally, the deed was done.

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

This is the new floor that I was drooling over, it's the Mid-Century Emerald Sheet Vinyl. I am so happy that Zazous Online wanted to collaborate with me, be sure to check out their Etsy store, they've got so many cool choices including some that look like wood and they have furniture too!

They are in the UK but shipping was so fast!

I laid it out on the floor a couple of days ahead of our project so it could acclimate and flatten out.

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

This stuff was so easy to install, you can cut it with scissors. I measured the bathroom and then added a couple of inches on all sides just to be sure since I only had ONE chance to get it right, I must have measured 8 times, I was so nervous!!

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

Ta-da!! You'll see in the video, this is an upgrade from old vinyl sheeting because there's no need to glue it down, it's kind of a big carpet! You can even cut it to smaller sizes and use it as an area rug/floor cloth!! Hallelujah! I'm so tired of scraping glue!!

I read online that you can use double-sided carpet tape around the edges if you're nervous about it moving around. I am installing new baseboard molding that will hold down the edges of this but it's not going to curl like regular sheet vinyl anyway. I will most likely use a strip of tape along the doorway but there will eventually be a threshold there when we get the laundry room done.

We bought new 4-inch molding to replace the old rubber stuff. I'm getting to be pretty good at cutting miters!!

Then we installed our new sink. It's a laundry sink in case you hadn't noticed. I made a little mood/design board when I was trying to envision how this was all going to work and I think I'm getting pretty close!

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

Why are we using a laundry sink in the bathroom?

Well, in the picture below, I am actually standing in the laundry room and there is no sink in there. We wanted to have a laundry sink without having to install new plumbing and that sort of thing. And even though this is what you'd consider a "utility" sink, I know I can make this look cute and stylish still 😉

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

You'll also notice that it is sitting on top of some sort of box... we had to get creative with this... the pipes for the sink come out of the wall and they hit the back of this deep sink which was no Bueno. So, we made it a little pedestal out of a drawer that came out of the kitchen when we demoed part of that!

I'm telling you, it makes me happier than it probably should to reuse things in a creative way like this! I even squealed with joy when I covered the top (actually the bottom of the drawer, now the top) of it with the flooring! I like it! It's unique like me! I will of course fill the hole from the old drawer pull and paint it.

Our next hurdle was that the sink stuck out too far even though it was a space-saving sink. So again, we got creative, and do you know what we did? We installed it sideways! The area where the faucet would have gone is now on the left and we'll use it for soap and something cute, lol.

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

I made a little shelf for the faucet to take the place of the one in the sink. It's made out of a scrap of wood, I used my hole saw to cut three holes for the faucet and mounted it to the wall with L-brackets!

Here's what it looks like from underneath. Then we just pushed the sink up against it.

Then we reinstalled the toilet with a new wax ring and a new toilet seat.

Now, it was ready for me to wallpaper but here's where we had another hiccup... I hadn't purchased enough wallpaper 😒

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

Also, this is like the old-school wallpaper where you get it wet and then fold the ends in to activate the glue... slap me if I ever want to do this kind of wallpaper again. 😖 Peel-and-stick is SO. MUCH. EASIER.

I toyed with the idea of ordering more wallpaper but there's always the chance that it won't match perfectly when you do that and this is from Spoonflower and it's expensive. I decided that maybe the whole bathroom wallpapered in this and the bold floor together in this small room might be a bit much anyway, so I just did this one wall and then chose a pretty green to paint the rest of the walls.

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

I think this was a happy accident. Side note... would you look at that beautiful deep window sill?! It's gonna be perfect for a happy little plantie!!

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

I also framed the little hole in the wall where the medicine cabinet was and painted it green. I have a unique idea for this space, and I hope it works out.

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

I think I'm going to leave the original light. It has a plug-in in it and it's the only one in the room.

Tiny Bathroom Makeover - Part 1

I'm so in love with the room so far, what do you think? It feels so fresh, clean, and fun now!

Here's a side-by-side comparison.

So what's next for Part 2? Well...

  • a mirror
  • a fun update to the shower
  • a DIY sliding door to separate this room from the laundry when needed
  • decorating!!!

  2. I love it! Fun and innovative ideas! I'm interested to see what you do with the opening in the wall and the shower. No one can accuse you of being afraid of color! LOL!
