Knock Off Anthropologie Vases

25 March

I'm excited because today is Do-It-Over-Designers Day!!

If you are new, the Do-It-Over-Designers is a group of my blogging friends and me. We get together and challenge ourselves to find something old or unused and "do it over" into something new. We find our items in closets, barns, garages, yard sales, thrift stores, you name it!

I will share my project and then at the end, I'll link to all my friends' projects and you can check out what they've made too!

Supplies Needed

Knock Off Anthropologie Vases

I love to scroll through the home section of the Anthropologie website for inspiration. One of their brands is Terrain which is all things gardening as well as things like vases, wreaths, silk flower arrangements, etc.

Check out the wreath I duped: DIY Anthropologie Heart Wreath Dupe

They have some really pretty colored glass vases that I wanted to see if I could recreate on my own.

These are some of their vases.

I have seen lots of tutorials for using Mod Podge and food coloring to color glass but that requires lots of drying time and then you're supposed to bake it in the oven. I didn't want to do all that... I wanted the lazy way out!

Here are a couple of the vases I picked up at the thrift store for just .99 cents each.

I wanted to try alcohol ink to see if it would color the glass.

This turned out to be the easiest project ever! All you have to do is put a few drops at a time of the ink directly onto the jar and then rub it around with a cotton ball!

You do have to work kind of quickly because the ink dries fast. I just did a small section at a time.

This is what it looked like after just one coat.

It dries almost immediately so I just put a couple more layers on it, one right after the other.

Here is how it turned out!

I did a couple of pink ones too.

And do you like those flowers? I made them too, I'll share that project soon... you'll be surprised what they are made out of (or maybe you won't) 😉

For the pink vase on the far right, I tried to make it look like frosted glass by spraying a light coat of white spray paint over it but I'm not sure I like it.

So, then I tried the tallest vase in the middle. It didn't saturate with color as well as the other two which is weird... like why not? They are all just plain glass.

I didn't coat them with anything, I was afraid that it would do something weird to the ink coating. They seem pretty durable but I don't think I'll really be washing them with soap or anything. I'll just rinse them out.

What do you think?

Here are the links to check the other projects, I'm sure they will not disappoint!

  1. Oh wow, Tania! You are after my own heart! I made clear plastic candlesticks using ornaments and wanted to color them. I first got the idea from some I saw on the Terrain site! I actually tried alcohol inks on small plastic plates but didn't like how the ink settled. I used sponges, paint brushes and spray bottles. Thanks to you, now I know what to use and how to do it - cotton balls! I love how your vases turned out! So pretty and perfect!

  2. I love this kind of glass vase but you are right, most of the hacks to make them seem complicated, messy or just not very good. This is super easy and even if it does come off after a few uses it would be easy enough to just do again wouldn't it?

    1. Thank you and yes, it only took a few minutes! I'll have to experiment with sealing one and see what happens.

  3. Your vases look like they should be right there with the Anthropologie ones! I love when we can replicate pricey items for next to nothing.

  7. I always love a good Anthro dupe! I had never heard of alcohol ink but now I am inspired to try it out. Your vases turned out lovely. I think they are WAY better than anything from Anthropologie. Thank you for sharing your post on the Home Imagined Link party.
