DIY Chambersticks With Vintage Plates

24 May

Today I'm sharing a fun and, dare I say, super sweet little DIY project that you can make for gifts or for your own home.

This month's Do-It-Over-Designers challenge is here, and I got these done just in time. After I share my project, there will be links to check out the other amazing projects!

I made some cute little DIY chambersticks with vintage plates. But before I share how I made them, do you know what a chamberstick is?

Assuming that everyone has heard the story or seen a movie about Scrooge. Well, the candleholder that he was carrying around is called a chamberstick. They were used in the 18th and 19th centuries for maneuvering around the house after dark... to light the way to your "chambers." 😉

Now that you know, let's get on with this project.

Supplies Needed
Optional

I used white Sculpey oven-bake clay to make the parts that will go on the plates. You could definitely use clay in the color you want from the beginning, or paint them like I did.

I cut rectangles of rolled-out clay to form both the candleholder portion and the handles.

Make sure you use a real candle to form this portion so it will fit.

For the handles, I pushed them onto the plates to get the shape so that when I glued them on, they would match the shape of the plate.

Then I baked the pieces according to the package directions.

Here they are after baking.

The parts were glued to the plates with heavy-duty adhesive. My preference is E6000.

I taped the handles while the glue dried, just to ensure a good connection.

Once the glue was dry, I painted them, and on some, I did some napkin decoupage!

I think this one with the yellow daffodil center may be my favorite.

On this one, I painted the edges of the handle and candleholder gold to match the gold edge on the plate, and decoupaged a flower from a napkin on the candleholder.

I did the same thing on this one. I love how the flowers match those on the plate so well.

  2. Tania, this is such a great idea! When I saw the flower like piece, I immediately thought of a set of candlesticks I inherited from my grandma, and I though oh my goodness, I can create more! The idea of a chamberstick is golden, and I need these for my dining room. I just made it over, and this idea would be a perfect addition. Great idea, and so creative!

For some reason I can only reply as anonymous. What a clever idea, Tania! I love these, especially the decoupage floral ones. These would be so pretty as guest table centerpieces for a country/garden wedding. ~Marie

    1. Thank you Marie, they really would be a pretty centerpiece with a bunch of mismatched ones. You could even leave the handle off and just have the saucers with the candleholder! As far as your comment being anonymous, I'm reading online that it's because you have 3rd party cookies blocked in your settings.

  8. Well, that is a super creative way to use old dishes. I have a weakness for vintage plates, but I've stopped buying since I've run out of room to display them. Now I have a new reason to buy and display. Thanks!!

  9. How cute are those?! I'll bet i have a stash of plates hidden around already. But i'll definitely be paying more attention to them at thrift shops and yard sales. And someone's mention of hiding a chipped edge is genius!
