Grinch Popcorn Recipe

09 December
Do you like to watch Christmas movies this time of year?

I do, I love to watch the old cartoons that I watched as a child. I watched them as a child and with my daughter when she was growing up. My favorite cartoon Christmas movie of all time is The Grinch.

It's always nice to have snacks when you are watching movies and popcorn is a traditional movie snack. So, to go along with my favorite movie, I'm sharing a recipe for Grinch popcorn which is the perfect snack while you're enjoying the movie!

The original Grinch song was sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. He was also the voice behind Tony the Tiger's "They're GRRREAT!" You can listen to it below while you make the popcorn 😃

Grinch Popcorn Movie Snack Recipe

Ingredients (you can cut this in half for a smaller batch for just one or two people):

  • 20 cups of popcorn (I used Pop Secret)
  • 6 cups of mini marshmallows
  • 4 tbsp. salted sweet cream butter
  • yellow and blue food coloring
  • Red M&M's or cinnamon heart candies

Directions

  1. Pop the popcorn (it will take about 3 regular-size bags of microwave popcorn to make 20 cups) and place it in a large bowl.
  2. Pick out any unpopped kernels.
  3. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan.
  4. Add the mini marshmallows. Stir continually until they have all melted.
  5. Add 5 or 6 drops of yellow food coloring (until you have a bright yellow color)
  6. Add 2 or 3 drops of blue food coloring to get the Grinch green color (tip: start with 2 drops and then add more as needed)
  7. Pour over the popcorn.
  8. Stir to coat all of the popcorn.
  9. Throw the red M&M's or cinnamon hearts in as you are stirring so they will stick to the popcorn.
  10. EAT IT!!! Mmmmmm...

Step One - Make the popcorn

Pop the popcorn, remove the unpopped kernels, and place it in a large bowl. It will take about three regular-size bags of microwave popcorn to make 20 cups.

I found it easiest to measure out the popcorn a cup at a time and remove the popped kernels by hand leaving the unpopped kernels in the bottom of the measuring cup.

Step Two - Make the coating

Melt the butter over medium heat.

To make the Grinch green, begin adding blue food coloring a little bit at a time (start with 2 drops) until you have the green you want.

Step Three - Mix it together

Pour the mixture over the popcorn and stir to coat.

Throw in some red M&M's or cinnamon heart candies while it is warm so they'll stick into the mixture. These represent The Grinch's small heart that grew 3 sizes that day!

I was only able to find red and green M&M's so I just picked out some red ones. You won't need very many.

Now enjoy, this is so good 😛

At this point you could form it into popcorn balls if you want, then everyone will have their own snack while watching the movie!

You could also make this as Rice Krispie Treats!
