DIY Front Door Basket for Spring

12 April

The "official" first day of spring was March 20th but it's almost halfway through April and it's just now starting to show signs that spring is finally on the way!

I took down the Easter decor that I had added to my mantel and it's now back to Spring Mantel Decor.

I want to add a few spring touches to my front porch and I found a small half basket at the thrift store the other day that I thought would be a great alternative to a wreath for my front door.

Read on to see how I made my wreath alternative door basket!

If you want to make one similar, these are the supplies you'll need:

I found the basket at a local thrift store for $1.99.

I cut a few chunks off the florist's foam to fill up the bottom of the basket to give a surface for the floral stems.

Then to disguise the foam, I used some moss to cover it.

Then I started adding in some greenery stems. I started with some ferns that I picked up at Walmart.

And some fuzzy lamb's ear behind the ferns.

Then this drapey stuff... I don't know what it is but I found it at Walmart too.

When you are planting outdoor flower pots they say you should have a filler, a spiller, and a thriller so I've used that concept in this basket too... the greenery is the filler, the drapey thingy is the spiller, and I'm using a vintage sprinkler as a fun thriller! 😃 I don't think you can go wrong with that rule!

To secure the sprinkler into the basket, I used a piece of a stem that I cut from a silk flower and bent the end into a hook shape. Then I pushed it up into the sprinkler so the hook caught inside.

I added a few more "filler" flowers and then I wanted to add a bird's nest to the mix. I didn't have one large enough though so I used some raffia and created one by wrapping it around my fingers a few times and tying it in a couple of spots just to keep it in a circular shape.

A couple of plastic bird's eggs finish the nest off nicely.

The final touch to my new front door basket is a bow! I found this polka dot burlap ribbon at the Dollar Store!

Here it is hanging on my front door but it's kind of hard to get good photos so I moved it to the wall next to the door for pictures.

What do you think of my little touch of spring?

I have lots of other old small yard hand tools, I may try making a couple of wreaths with them.

I had a little fun with my photo editor and made it into a watercolor!

    1. Thanks Tuula! It seems like something that you would make although yours would be much more colorful :)
