How to Design a Long Narrow Patio
23 June
I've lived in my house for almost 5 years now and I've struggled with the long, narrow back patio pretty much the whole time.
It stretches the entire length of the house and is only about 8 feet wide. About half of it is covered with a patio roof, the rest is open.
The first year or two I tried to cram everything under the covered part but it's far too small for seating, dining, and my barbeque all under the cover.
So, I did some research (aka surfing Pinterest 😉) for ideas for long, narrow patios and it finally dawned on me that I needed to divide it up into zones!
I now have three main zones...

I now have three main zones...
- an area for lounging that has a couch and two chairs, a coffee table, my chiminea fireplace, and flowers
- a dining area with my table, benches, and barbeque
- an area for sunbathing and enjoying some more flowers
How to Design a Long Narrow Patio
I shared the lounging area a few weeks ago in my Spring Patio Refresh.
You can see some of the posts that helped to create this relaxing area below:
Just past the horse trough garden is the dining area.
I have a brand new (and actually cute!) barbeque that I'll be sharing soon!
Until then you can see the projects that created the dining area here:
The newest area that I created is an area perfect for sunbathing... not that I do that a whole lot because I am whiter than snow, but I do like to sit out there sometimes!
I found the vintage lounge chair at a thrift shop a couple years ago for $5. The faux grass is something I got in exchange for a blog post. That post is here: Artificial Grass Camping Mat.
I decided to use it out here while we are still working on Bertha (my vintage RV).
Oh my goodness, you should have seen how excited my little dog Pongo was when we rolled out this faux grass! He rolled all around on it and just looked so happy! 😁
I created the flower area just by gathering up some things from my yard... the old park bench, various flower pots, a gazing ball, an old toy truck, and an Upcycled Shovel. It's a good thing I had all that already because MAN flowers are expensive nowadays!!
It's been a few weeks since I planted these and the planters are filling out nicely now!
I can't wait until they get really lush and big!

What does your patio look like? Is it long and narrow or is there something else challenging about it?
