Updating Original Kitchen Cupboards

24 October

I've been working in our kitchen at our house lately updating our original 1960s cupboards.

This latest update required the use of my chop saw, so I needed to do some of the work outside and I wanted to get them done before it gets too cold outside.

I have created a video showing how I did this update for your viewing pleasure, I hope you enjoy it 😊

Let's start with some before pictures of our kitchen!

These are from the listing picture that the real estate company had.

They really don't look that bad... from afar... why is it that before pictures of things like houses always seem to look better than they really are but pictures of us always make us look worse than we really do?! 😕

Up close this kitchen needed some serious work!

One thing I really wanted to do was give these original 1960s cabinets a refresh to modernize them a bit.

The plastic handles put on diagonally had to go for one thing!

But that's not the first thing we started with. One of our first projects was ripping out the old sheet vinyl flooring and rubber floor molding. Then we installed new snap-together vinyl tiles. Then we scrubbed and painted the walls Polar Bear white by Behr and installed new track lighting from IKEA.

Then we stopped and worked on some other projects:

DIY Plate Rack Wall in the dining room

Dining Room Arch Wall and Shelf Styling in the dining room

DIY Built-In Entertainment Center in the basement

DIY Coat Closet in the basement

Painting, flooring, and removing a load-bearing wall in the basement - Progress on the Basement at the Fixer-Upper House

DIY Fireplace Makeover with Peel-and-Stick Tiles in the living room

My craft room update - Little Vintage Cottage Craft Room Tour

An Arched Butterfly Gallery Wall at the top of the stairs

DIY Stair Runner from Throw Rugs

Whew! Way to avoid that kitchen update amiright?! 😂

But I'm finally back in my kitchen makeover groove!

I filled the old cabinet pull holes and sanded each door to prep for painting.

Then I cut trim pieces to go around each door from wood lattice trim that I got at Home Depot to create a shaker cabinet look.

And the nice thing about shaker cabinets is there are NO MITERS to cut! Woop-woop!

I reused the old hinges but my new cabinet hardware is gold so I gave them an update. This is what they looked like and I left them on until I was ready to work on them. I did each door individually as I got the trim added and the door painted.

Then, I removed each hinge individually, updated them with gold Rub 'n Buff, and then put them right back on. Exact same hinge in the exact same spot and guess what... there were still a couple of doors that wouldn't hang right 😩

I did it this way because in my past experience, trying to replace hinges on old 1960's cupboards and get them to hang correctly again is... well damn near impossible! I had trouble with it in my last kitchen. You can see that update here: Updated 1960s Kitchen Reveal.

I painted the cupboards Creamy Mushroom by Behr and added new gold cabinet pulls.

    1. Thank you Jeannie! I'm not sure about that cabinet yet. I plan to wallpaper the wall that it's sitting against so I may just wallpaper the back of the cabinet to match but I have to see if I have enough left over first!

  3. Nice save on the original cabinets! What a difference adding simple shaker style trim on the original doors made, let alone how much moola you saved doing it this way. Girl, am I loving the new hardware!
