Let's talk about mailboxes for a minute 😊 They used to be a standard thing that every house had. At some point, they started adding a row of mailboxes in centrally located areas within a neighborhood. Nowadays, they build new neighborhoods with a mailbox kiosk and every house is assigned a smaller box within the large cluster and given a key.

The house I grew up in has a mailbox on the house. I have lived in apartments and new housing developments where there is a kiosk, and older neighborhoods where there was a row of mailboxes across the street.

There are certain things about a house that I find charming and always look for. A mailbox directly on the house is one and I'm happy that my current house has the mailbox on the house (I also love a wooden screen door that bangs closed but that's a topic for another post)!

Anyway, all that talk about mailboxes because of this project 😂

I was given this vintage-inspired post box in exchange for this blog post. That company doesn't seem to be in business any longer but you can still get these on Amazon. They have many different versions of this Embossed Tin Mailbox (including this exact one).

Today I'm sharing three different ways that I thought of using it other than the obvious!

While I'm using this vintage-inspired post box that was given to me, these ideas would work for any style of mailbox.

This one is pretty cute. It has pretty embossed details, the top opens and there is a little flap on top of the lid that opens too!

So here are my ideas for other ways you can use it:

Idea #1. Use it in the kitchen!

I put a vintage rolling pin, an old cookbook, some wooden spoons, and a whisk inside for a cute vintage display.

Add an S-hook to hang a vintage dishtowel or cute pot holders on the side.

If you have an area next to the stove where you can hang it, you can use it for all your utensils (large spoons, tongs, and whisks).

Idea #2. Transform it into a bird feeder!

This is easy to make by simply attaching a pie tin to the bottom and drilling a hole in the bottom of the mailbox so the bird food falls into the pan.

As I'm writing this post it is winter so I've decorated it with winter greenery and snowflakes.

Idea #3. Decorate it for the holidays!

I created this one with $5 worth of artificial flowers from Walmart and some branches from my twisted Filbert bush.

I found an image of a vintage letter from Santa online and printed it (I made this for Christmas but any vintage letter would be pretty to carry it through the winter).

Switch out the flowers for some in red, white, and blue and add a few little flags for the 4th of July; use some spring flowers and add some plastic eggs and a chick or bunny for Easter; use some red and white flowers and add some vintage Valentines or love letters for Valentine's Day... you get the idea!

It's an easy way to have some holiday decor on a tiny porch!

What do you think of these ideas? Did you come up with some other ideas of your own?

  27. This reminds me of the cast iron mailbox I had growing up. My mom displayed on on the front porch even though her mail was delivered through a slot in the garage. I would love to give it a mail motif similar to the first one you showed. Maybe I could add mail-related embellishments. rush88888 at gmail dot com
